um, Excuse Me?? "Bush Plans To Expand Military "??
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 07:19 PM by leftchick
wtf? How does he do this without a DRAFT? Who in their right mind, in any significant numbers, would volunteer for bushco**s wars??? He is clearly insane. IMPEACH his ass!!!

<snip>

President Bush, working to recraft his strategy in Iraq, said Tuesday that he plans to increase the size of the U.S. military so it can fight a long-term war against terrorism.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Bush said he has asked his new defense chief, Robert Gates, to report back to him with a plan to increase ground forces. The president did not say how many troops might be added, but said he agreed with officials in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill that the current military is being stretched too thin to deal with demands of fighting terrorism.

"I'm inclined to believe that we do need to increase our troops – the Army, the Marines," Bush said in the Oval Office session. "And I talked about this to Secretary Gates and he is going to spend some time talking to the folks in the building, come back with a recommendation to me about how to proceed forward on this idea."

<snip>

They also worry that it feeds a perception that the strife and chaos in Iraq is mainly a military problem; in their view it is largely political, fed by economic distress.

It will take time to train and recruit more soldiers, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin. Army chief of staff General Pete Schoomaker estimates the army could increase its current number of 507,000 by at most 7,000 a year. And it will also cost a lot of money – those additional 7,000 soldiers would cost about $840 million a year.

4. yes indeed, it is the key
and yet the Dems in power do not dare to do that. They hate to look "weak" while our soldiers and Iraqis continue to DIE.

3. nobody is gonna stop him - there is NO opposition party that opposes in the USA
bullies always depend on their victims to cave in and bush knows the dems will cave in on just about anything and everything if bush just keeps doing the same thing over and over. it has worked for him for 6 years and there is NO evidence he is wrong about it.

wish the dems in congress would prove me wrong.

5. he says expand Army, Marines - the shrapnel magnets.
He can do this by changing the rules regarding the reserves and National Guard units and how frequently they can be called up, AND by using Rummys "Blue to Green" program... You remember that one, right - Rumsfeld thought Air Force and Navy would VOLUNTEER to switch over to Marine or Army. When the results were in and as disappointing as one could expect - Rummy took to "volunteering" sailors himself. That's why you have SAILORS killed in Baghdad and throughout Iraq. They have been handed over to help their brothers in the Marines.

Bush will destroy the Air Force and Navy to keep from having to institute a draft because a draft is political kryptonite and the repubs will not stand for it - they are already weak enough because of Dubya.

7. As I understand it by playing games with "rotations"....
Several military types I've heard speak lately indicated a 25-30k increase in troop strength was possible by "manipulating" the tour rotation dates. They also said this "technique" would only work for the short term.

So bottom line, it sounds like they are going to adjust rotation dates effectively raising the level of troops in Iraq by around 25-30k. However, once the schedule "settles in", troop strength would be back where it is today.

So in otherwords... he is not "sending" more, he just plans overlap which gives the "appearance" of an increase... though artificial.

8. Expand for what?
Nobody is going to militarily attack us. Bush says we need a bigger military for the "war on terror." What exactly is the "war on terror?" Is Bush planning another 50 years of Iraqs?

Just like wiser heads are now asking for a specific credible plan for Iraq before committing more troops, Congress should also demand a plan for the military in the future. Will we continue to play world policeman? Is Bush still planning to invade every Muslim country and install democracies? Aren't there some other operations we could turn over to the rest of the world?

12. As I have said in other threads on this subject, the Congress must authorize a draft
He will do it by having Gates push the blue to green program (Google that, and crap), by intiating harsh force reductions in the USN/USAF (civilianizing jobs left and right) and plussing up the end strength of the ground forces in the USMC/USA with the difference.

See, he can't even plus up the total force numbers without an OK from Congress, but he can fiddle with the numbers in other ways. And the Congress may well fold and allow it even though we know why he's asking, if it is painted as "relief" for overrotated personnel who are coming off Tour Fucking Five in the Sandbox....can't be painted as a non-troop-supporter, especially if yer up fer reelection in a presidential election year!!!

14. He can do it no problem
Just appeal to the Fundies and young Republicans.
Tell them he needs there sacrifice now...that God needs them...and that all young people that support him and the war should do gods work and march themselves down to the military recruiter and join up.
I would support this. It is time that they put up.
