1. Also the Indian Territory was abolished in 1907

The Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory were combined in 1907 to create the state of Oklahoma. I mention it not to celebrate the entry of Oklahoma into the Union but to point out 1907 was also the year Europeans had finally grabbed all the land between Canada and Mexico that they had promised at various times to preserve for the original Native American peoples. (Arizona and New Mexico would enter the Union later as states, but the Indian territory in what's now Oklahoma was where various tribes were compelled to relocate to.) The eastern part of present-day Oklahoma which was the Indian Territory and the legal home of the "five civilized tribes", was the last remnant of a vast inland country that once included all land West of the Appalachian Mtns. (per treaty obligations of the British Royal gov't), then the land west of the Mississippi (post-American Revolution and Louisiana Purchase), then the land between the Red River in the south and the lower Missouri River. After creation of Oklahoma as the 46th state, the concept of Indian tribal sovereignty over anything like a separate country of their own ceased completely, and only the reservation system remains as its echo. The reason for the final liquidation of the Indian Territory? Along with continuing pressure from whites for more land to settle, Oklahoma turned out to be rich in--yep, you guessed it--oil.
