1. Well I guess security will be fine afterall
Security for Super Bowl called into questionBY PAUL DOMOWITCHPhiladelphia Daily NewsPHILADELPHIA -

During the last few years, the NFL has tried to stage a more cost-efficient Super Bowl. But it could be playing with fire in its latest money-saving attempt.

The league has cut ties with the nationally respected security firm it has used for the last 29 Super Bowls, California-based Contemporary Services Corporation. It will go a less expensive route this year, hiring three smaller, less-experienced companies to handle security for Super Bowl XL next week in Detroit.

The league sure has picked a strange time to make a security switch of this magnitude, considering that next week's game will be played just a half-mile from an international border. (Detroit is across the river from Windsor, Ontario.) It also comes just three weeks after the latest taped threat of a terrorist attack by Osama bin Laden.

NFL sources told the Philadelphia Daily News that the league felt CSC, which is considered the top "big-event" security firm in the country, had become too pricey. The league challenged nearly $500,000 of its billing from CSC for last year's Super Bowl in Jacksonville, sources said.
"They just wanted to save money and go in a different direction," said Damon Zumwalt, CSC's president and chief executive officer. "They said they were looking at a different approach to doing it this year. They feel they can hire local companies and try to cut back on some of the costs."

3. Three separate firms?
I don't care who's attending. That is a disaster waiting to happen. I might even watch this year.

5. Yep, that was my thought too
Three separate firms. Plenty of scapegoating to go around in a case like that.

2. oh I heard all about it
If a performer has a wardrobe malfunction that causes her nipple metallurgy to inadvertantly expose itself, along with said supporting nipple, three laser cannon beams will converge on the the performer, instantly vaporizing her within a thousandth of a second to a glowing cloud of nipplish hued plasma and hooter ash.

A large spinning cross with pulsed particle beam plasma blasters will then erupt from the stage, spinning 666 times per second, scanning the audience for non-believers, men who leave the toilet seat up, women who don't look at the toilet before sitting, insurgents wearing Democratic Underground T-Shirts, and anyone who may have inadvertantly seen the nipple incident and failed to begin wailing and clawing at their hair and bosoms with righteous outrage.

Let's get serious amid fun, games

For most of my life, charity meant writing a check.

But a few years ago, a former professor of mine scolded me for not doing more. He told me if you're in the public eye, you can rouse people to action.

So today, with your kindness, I'm going to try and do that, because I heard a story a few weeks ago and I couldn't get it out of my head.

The story, in essence, was that, with the city's encouragement, a local homeless shelter was going to offer a three-day "party" over Super Bowl weekend that would provide food and a big-screen TV -- and would also cut the visibility of our most downtrodden citizens.
