One reason to be thankful GW is currently president |
|
There is one silver lining to the Bush presidency.
He was not at the helm during the height of the Cold War. If he had been, we surely would have been fried in a nuclear conflagration.
Even Reagan was a dove compared to this guy.

1. The Cuban Missile Crisis would have become the Russian/American nuclear weapon exchange. |

6. True - I wrote a letter to the editor on that |
|
All of the neo-con wing of the Republic party are dismissing the idea of talking to Iran & Syria because those countries don't have our best interests at heart.
So, my response was something like "Did the Soviets have our best interests at heart when JFK negotiated with them over the Cuban Missile Crisis? Were Nixon, Ford, Carter & Reagan weaklings for engaging in the SALT talks with them? Was Nixon surrendering to China when he went there?"

2. That's not a good reason to be grateful he's president now, |
|
but it's a damn good reason to be grateful he wasn't president during the Cuban missile crisis. If he had been, we wouldn't be here now to have this discussion. :scared:

3. Reagan was no dove, but his saving grace |
|
was that he didn't believe a word of the neo Calvinist nonsense being spouted by the religious lunatics. He just used them to get elected.
Stupid believes every word of it and is longing for Armageddon where he and the rest of his class will be sucked up into heaven as they watch the rest of us burn in the wars they started.
That's the difference.

7. I think Bush is using them, too |
|
He just has more of the religious types in his White House because the Religious Reich has gained in power since the Reagan days, so has to do more to appear to please them.
The difference is, I think, Reagan didn't always treat the opposition with contempt (didn't he & Tip O'Neill often meet after hours? I can't imagine Bush doing that with Pelosi, or any Democrat) and would admit to his mistakes (Iran-Contra, the marines in Beirut) Reagan also had a Democrat-controlled House during his tenure as well.

I'm not sure that's a silver lining because IMO he never should have had the job.

5. I'm not discounting nuclear conflagration while he's in charge.. |
|
