In a statement, Leavitt said he recently visited pharmacies across the country to learn about how the Medicare prescription drug coverage is working. "I saw up close and personal how hard pharmacists are working to make sure every person in Medicare gets their prescriptions under the new coverage," he said. "Pharmacists have been making heroic efforts to ensure that people with Medicare get their medicines."
Leavitt said Medicare officials will work with insurance companies to reduce wait times for people trying to fill prescriptions and will give increased attention to the billing issues that pharmacists face.
His comments come one day after Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) announced that helping low-income people get
prescription drugs under the new Medicare benefit could cost the state of Washington $14 million to $17 million annually in co-pays alone.
The governor said the program's startup has been traumatic for "dual eligibles." On Jan. 1, those people about 95,000 in Washington were transferred to private insurance plans, which require co-pays on prescriptions that she said many people cannot afford.
