Sam Brownback is a very strange man
In a visit to Davenport, IA yesterday, he said that still wants a judicial nominee to answer questions about her attendance at a commitment ceremony for a lesbian couple, even though he has since dropped the hold on her nomination. It seems that he put a hold on a nominee named Janet Neff due in part to the fact she attended a same sex commitment ceremony. Ms. Neff has stated that one of the women was the daughter of a friend. The incident occured four years ago.
So what is wrong with Brownback and others like him? Why shouldn't Ms. Neff or anyone else be able to attend a ceremony in which two people are stating their love for each other? Especially when one of the parties is a life long friend. We do not need Brownback or anyone else like him for president. For info on this story go to www.qctimes.net and click on local news. It is about halfway down the page.

12. I'll second that!
His platform is pretty clear (from the Rolling Stone article posted below):

"In its place will be a country so suffused with God and the free market that the social fabric of the last hundred years -- schools, Social Security, welfare -- will be privatized or simply done away with. There will be no abortions; sex will be confined to heterosexual marriage. Men will lead families, mothers will tend children, and big business and the church will take care of all."

Something about that just makes me want to have some unmarried, protected heterosexual sex now...and lots of it!

2. So, he's afraid she can't be impartial?
Ok, then I guess it also wasn't ok with him when scalia sat on the bench during a legal issue with his hunting buddy, cheney? Does he also want all judges who attend church to step down when a religious matter is brought before the court?

Humm... why do I doubt that?

4. As his employer and public citizens
we demand why he thinks he should be able to question a person's private comings and goings. As long as a person is not threatening people where they go and what they do is none of his business. If I lived in his state I would constantly send him letters demanding where he goes and what he does while he is there.

9. He doesn't answer letters or phone calls
Nor is he inclined to visit with constituents. Trust me, I've tried. I've sent him letters, I've called his office, I've even gone to Topeka and sat outside his office but no response. I've even tried to get in with small groups and nada. He's worse than Jim Ryun, who was recently lost his re-election bid to Nancy Boyda despite Bush and Cheney coming here to give him a boost.

11. He has answered me only once, when I wrote about the
separation of church and state. I got a very long, very scary right-wing response from him. I wrote back and told him I couldn't disagree more, but for some reason he did not reply.

14. I did have one friend who got in to see His Highness
I think he got in because of family connections. Nothing ever came out of it except some empty promise to get back to him. My friend wasn't a voter, he wasn't even registered, so there was no reason for Brownback to talk to him.

16. Sam and my mother are regular penpals...
She writes him a blast about once every other month, and he always answers promptly. They're such frequent correspondents that his letters, which used to be signed "Sam Brownback" are now just "Sam". I think he enjoys toying with her, since his responses are always right-wing bullshit that make her blood pressure skyrocket.

She writes to Roberts about as frequently and he's answered exactly once.

Interesting that Brownback now wants to question who judicial nominees associate with in their private time - wasn't guilt by association a favorite tactic of Jos. McCarthy? Brownback is such a humiliating cross for Kansas to bear.

19. That's funny
Roberts answers my mail and I've had several meetings with his staff. His office also return phone calls. I also get unsolicited mail from Roberts. At least I keep up with what little he does.

His decision to block the nominee has raised constitutional issues:

In an interview last week, Mr. Brownback said that he still believed Judge Neff’s behavior raised serious questions about her impartiality and that he was likely to vote against her. But he said he did not realize his proposal — asking a nominee to agree in advance to remove herself from deciding a whole category of cases — was so unusual as to be possibly unprecedented. Legal scholars said it raised constitutional questions of separation of powers for a senator to demand that a judge commit to behavior on the bench in exchange for a vote.

Don't forget that Sam was an attorney before becoming a senator. :eyes: So much for his understanding of legal concepts as both an attorney and a law maker.

6. Brownback is Opus Dei
about as conservative a Fundie as you can get. His way was paved by illegal campaign donations linked to Oliver North and others.

7. This guy is just SO out there!!
Sam could play the role that Pat Buchanan played in 1996: he'll fire up the right-wing wackos and so well in early primaries, which would scare the shit out of what passes for rational Republicans. Once terrified, they will quickly coalesce around some establishment dinosaur who will lose but won't pull down the rest of the ticket. (Casting John McCain as Bitter Bob Dole)

On the other hand, we can only hope and pray that the Pukes would nominate Sammy Boy. Can you imagine this loon campaigning as the national Standard-Bearer???? :bounce:

I think even Newt as the nominee would do better than this guy.
