DU Charity Donation Drive, Day 2: $5,852 donated so far! AND A $3,000 CHALLENGE FROM REDSTONE!
Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 08:59 AM by Skinner
I just received today's update from the good people over at America's Second Harvest. Since we launched our charity donation drive on Monday, visitors to our website have donated $5,852! According to America's Second Harvest, "If every dollar provides 20 pounds of food then that should equal 117,040 pounds."

That's a great start! To be a part of our year-end charity donation fund drive to help feed the hungry across America, just click here:

http://help.secondharvest.org/democraticunderground

THE REDSTONE CHALLENGE: $3,000 worth of professional services if DUers raise $15,000!

DU member Redstone has pledged to donate $3,000 worth of his professional design services to America's Second Harvest if DUers are able to raise $15,000!

From Redstone: "If the donation level reaches $15K... I'll donate $3,000 worth of my professional services to any Second Harvest food bank (or to Second Harvest itself)... web work, printed materials (layout/design), posters, photography, PR writing, whatever."

Combined with the previous $1,500 challenge by Midlodemocrat, it's like every dollar you donate to America's Second Harvest will be worth $1.30 -- it's like increasing your donation by 30% automatically! That means the maximum challenge match available if we reach $15,000 is now $4,500 in money and services! Don't leave this money sitting on the table; donate to the DU Year-end Charity Donation Drive NOW! Just click here:

Thank you to everyone who has donated!

4. How generous of Redstone!
117,040 pounds of food so far is excellent, but if this goal is met it will be 300,000. That goes a long way toward feeding the hungry in the US!

6. Kinda makes ya proud to be a DU'er, don't it?
Note to myself: Redstone is immune to flaming from me, even if he triggers one of my pet peeve issues.

Tell me what your pet peeve issues are, and what side of them you're on, and I'll go out of my way to aviod triggering them.

Least I can do in return for such a nice comment. Thank you.

14. The economy is boomin' because the tax cuts is a-workin'!
We gotta reform those evil New Deal social programs so we can drown them in a bathtub!

Taxation is theft because it's MY! MUNEE! MY!! MUNEEEEE!!!!{/b]

And then there's my brother-in-law who will be here at our house soon because we're hosting the Christmas party for my Commander-in-Chief's side of the family. Again. Woh, I'd rather get beat with a stick than have to listen to him talk endlessly about his favorite subject: himself.

But you can walk on my lawn all you want, Redstone. You set a fine example to emulate. May God bless you and all those you hold dear during this holiday season.

I can attest to Redstone's great designs. I bought a cookbook that he had worked on for his local library. Beautifully done.

10. Why, thank you. When I saw Midlodem's challenge, I felt like a piker for only
sending DU $1.00 for each of the books DUers bought. So I had to up the ante this year.

I devote 20% of my working time doing volunteer design work for charities, and Food Banks are my absolute favorite.

After all, they feed people who can't afford food...what better thing is there for anyone to do?

11. Second Harvest is also able to stretch their dollar so that when you give
one dollar, it's like giving nine dollars.

Just thought I'd share that. I have done some volunteer work for S.H. and have done a fund raiser as well.

20. It Feels So Good To Be Able To Tell You This
Because of the unexpected generosity of the people who have been able
to help me on the thread started by LibraLiz1973 on behalf of myself and two others, I was able, myself, to make a small donation to the Second Harvest drive.

What comes around goes around

Happy Holidays to All!

21. I can attest to the help they provide.
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 10:38 PM by jeanarrett
A few years back, I was beset by car repairs that were ungodly, over $1,000, but I had to get to work, so car repairs came first, other priorities second.

My boss at the law firm I worked at at the time was on the board of one of the food banks in Detroit (Gleaner's - who work regularly with Second Harvest), and he showed up at my house one day with more food than I could have bought in several weeks. He knew I wouldn't go on my own. I was a little too proud to ask for help because I felt my income level was too high and other people needed it more. But I was in pretty dire straits. Four little kids, etc., but I figured I would suck it up somehow.

He went to the food bank personally and got the food for me and brought it to my house. What a wonderful help it was at the time. It was the only time I ever used a food bank, but what a relief! Sometimes, even working people only need a hand up a time or two. I'm so glad they are there.

I try to give back now whenever I can, and times are still tight and tough, but Karma is a good thing.

Here's the kicker: He was a dyed-in-the-wool Republican.

Thanks, Paul, wherever you are.
