As much as I complain about the fundies, they were very nice just now!
My doorbell rang about 10 minutes ago, and a fellow said, we're from the Baptist church, and we're singing Christmas Carol's door to door. Would it be alright if we sang a few for you? I said OK, which of course is not my normal reaction to them.

They had a group of about 20 people of all ages, the youngest appeared to be about 6.

They sang O Holy Night, It Camer Upon a Midnight Clear, and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. THEN the fellow who was leading the dinging opened my door and handed be a beautiful fruit basked, and said have a very Merry Christmas!

I have to admit, they sounded very good, and made me smile. That was a very nice thing for them to do.

1. They'll be back to put the screws on you
and try to talk you into accepting jeebus as your personal savior. Hope I'm wrong and they leave you alone. Please keep us posted - it will mean a lot to a cynical ol' bastard like me if they leave you the eff alone.

15. Jesus said the truth, giving and forgiveness will lead you
forward, meanwhile everyone wants to believe that he said that HE would take you where you thought you might like to go. How ridiculous.

2. Not all Christians are fundies
I know of at least three in my house who are staunch Democrats. I used to belong to the Southern Baptist church until they went in a direction I didn't choose to follow. Sounds like you enjoyed their visit.

16. The more mainline non-fundie Baptists
http://www.thefellowship.info/

Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. My church is apart of this. :)

and The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty ( http://www.bjconline.org/ ). Because if anyone knew anything about the Baptist denomination, they would know that Baptists are totally for separation of church and state.

7.  I am not a Christian but I love Christmas carols
and love the idea of groups going door to door to sing. Take their gift and be grateful. Kindness should be recieved with gratitude. The songs of Christmas are so pure and joyful, I guess they touch a childlike place in my heart. I would be grateful to any group that came and sang at my house wether I agreed with their religious philosophy or not.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 08:47 PM by LittleClarkie
Heh.

Still and all, I've known some very nice Baptists, and the North American Baptists are alot like ELCA Lutherans, in that they're somewhat more liberal than their counterparts. I think there's even a gay pastor in there somewhere, as well as a policy of being "accepting and affirming" to people of all walks of life and choices.

9. How lovely! Good for them and good for you!
Sounds like these are people who are actually endeavoring to follow the message of the Christ. I say this as an atheist Buddhist.

To find joy in singing songs and in listening to songs being sung is an act of fundamental humanness. It is good to feel our humanness, especially with other humans.

You, and the Baptist carolers, were simply behaving as humans. Thank you for the lovely story.

12. You're as bad as my husband. First hesaid "Why did they do THAT?"
Then he said, "You don't supposed there's something wrong with it do you?"

I actually did appreciate their kindness. That's what Churches are supposed to do; spread kindness and help people feel good. They didn't used to get so deeply involved in politics! All that does ispi** people off, and create a division that isn't really even there!

13. You have to remember
The fundamentalists that are forming your image of Christianity are simply the ones that are the loudest and most active. They really are just the tip of the iceberg and do not represent the entirety of Christianity. There are wonderful and marvelous believers out there. Open minded and driven by compassion.

When you meet someone do not assume you know everything about them just because you know about some label associated with them. Let them show you who they are before you decide who they are.

As Will Rogers famously said, I never met a man I didn't like. This doesn't mean that he liked everyone he met. It just means that you shouldn't decide whether you like a person or not until you get to know who they really are.

20. Actually yes
Atheism doesn't mean mean spirited or always angry. A lot of us are very into community, connectivity, and sharing the joy this time of year.

Christmas is a holiday for capitalists and fundamentalists, and I have no interest in having to listen to the crappy music. I wish this season would end already.
