So I bought some Alaskan cod in the market today and when |
|
I got home, there was a small label on it that said:
"WILD CAUGHT ALASKAN COD FILLETS PRODUCT OF CHINA"
Any Alaskan DUers here who can explain this? I always thought that fishing was one of the mainstays of the Alaskan and Canadian economies. Are we outsourcing our fisheries now too along with our forests to China?

I worked for EC Phillips and Sons, up in SE Alaska...we did everything, from catching them, filleting them, freezing them/smoking them, to putting them in nice little boxes to sell to tourists, and for other markets in the lower 48. I think you got had....
on edit:I notice it was cod...the Chinese/Russians, also fish our waters, especially the Bering Sea area...there is a cheap commode fish, called Pollack, which is used for most fast food/frozen fish sticks...perhaps, that's what you got...caught in Alaska waters, but produced, and processed by the Chinese.

5. I'd have to guess here...the fish were caught & processed by a Chinese ship |
|
in international waters near Alaska...? (I don't think cod grow in the South China Sea...and actually didn't even know they were native to the Pacific)

operations in our waters or maybe it isn't cod? Now that I think about it most cod is Islandic. I don't remember it being Alaskan, but I'm not sure.

11. I'm no piscatorial expert, but I've heard about overfishing of cod in the Atlantic |
|
especially off New England. Maybe it's a slightly different species? My own take on the seafood situation is enjoy it while we can because it will be gone in a couple of decades.

16. lemon, butter, and salt... |
|
the main seasonings, for almost all fish...you can hardly ever fail, with those spices...:D I'm stuck in SW Missouri, and the only fish I can find, are weak Pink Salmon...
Pink Salmon/aka Humpy's, are the lowest of the low, of Salmon...to me, they are a garbage fish, only to be used for crab/shrimp pots...but a lot of people down here think its GREAT! I'm like...bleh, try some sockeye, and your taste buds will explode! Sockeye/dog salmon are my favorite Salmons, but Halibut is by far, my favorite fish...:)

24. Not too far from you, NE Oklahoma. We have come to really like white bass |

from the lake about 200 yards from the house. They're basically free, if you don't mind chalking up a couple hours of relaxation/fishing to pure leisure. :D

near Disney? I'm still getting use to fishing for fresh water fish...the bass are rather fickle at times. My biggest catch here, was a 2lb small mouth bass....

Largemouth bass are fun to catch but not much good to eat. (We're the 2nd lake down the Grand river from Grand Lake, after Hudson)

never been to FT. Gibson, I try to stay out of Oklahoma as much as possible, not to many good memories...
A good friend of mine, has been trying to get me hooked on fishing here, but it hasn't taken a full grip on me yet...I would love to try pond fishing, but a lot of the folks in my area are rather...fickle themselves!...:) Grand lake has a lot of potential, but I would probably need a boat. I didn't realize how big Grand lake was, until I saw it on a map...

I do not even understand it, but read somewhere that they're planning on shipping chickens to China for processing, then bringing them back here. I don't get how it can be cheaper to do that, or how we can guarantee sanitary food, but there you have it.

I'm surronded by chicken plants, in SW Missouri...we got Tyson/Simmons plants spread out around here...and tons of chicken houses. It makes no sense to ship them over to China, to be sent back...well, that CEO logic I suppose.

23. I remember reading that too. |
|
(But in a different link than yours: one mentioning some company considering trying it out.)
Ocean shipping is cheap; Chinese labor is cheap; but I imagine they would kill (clean some?), freeze, ship, defrost, process, then refreeze the chickens.
They're going to offshore everything that can be done cheaper there, while driving labor costs down here -- to compete with the offshored labor... a losing proposition for most Americans in time.

http://www.agf.gov.bc.ca/fisheries/reports/SWOT/SWOT_Market.pdf4. What are the trends regarding reprocessing of frozen fish in China and elsewhere? What is the acceptability of previously frozen seafood as a source of raw material for value-added products? On pages 7 & 8 of the file.

they do it with the chicken we get. Pisses me off. And they said it's done more cheaply so no one can compete. Time to start writing letters again.

31. No, it's just shrink wrap with a label. The made in China label |
|
was put in an inconspicuous place on the back and I didn't see it until I got home. This is bigger than packaging. If you read the post above yours with the pdf report, the fish is frozen and sent to china to be filleted, wrapped and frozen again. The Chinese do it so cheaply no one else can compete. I guess the fisherman are local still. That's one thing that I was worried about that they were letting the Chinese fish in our territorial waters.
