Get ready for THE most shocking anti-Muslim display, ever.
Warning: I debated whether or not to post a picture of this, and finally decided there may be some people in the world who need to see just how low the so-called "patriots" can go. Still, it's going to upset a lot of people, so I put the picture to the bottom of this post. I know it will be hard not to look, but if you're easily upset by hanging effigies, of anyone, just don't. You have been warned.

That said...

This is old news -- the story came out a week ago -- but I just heard about it for the first time tonight; the local news just reported that the effigy was stolen. Frankly, I am surprised no one burned it down, and the house of these unbelievable bigots along with it:
Effigy of 'Arab' stirs uneasiness in San Anselmo

An effigy of a man in Arab headdress hanging from a gallows in a San Anselmo yard has become the latest public display of politics to raise eyebrows in a town becoming known for that type of thing.

Pat La Tray, 57, built the gallows for the straw effigy - which has an American flag piercing its heart - after police asked him to take it out of a tree on town property in front of his house at 330 Greenfield Ave. He built the effigy for Halloween, but said he has decided to leave it up as a symbol of his support for troops fighting in the Iraq war and his stance against terrorism.

"It is a patriotic symbol," La Tray said. "It has nothing to do with race or religion."

<snip>

La Tray said he moved to the house in 2002 with his wife, Nong. As a veteran of several wars, he said he is offended people don't stand up for American troops. "I'm an American to the bone," he said. "For me, it is strictly about Islamo-fascism."

<snip>

When asked her thoughts about the effigy, Nong La Tray, who is a citizen of Thailand and moved here in 2002, said she has no problem with it. She said Muslims were oppressive in her home country. "They're not good people," she said.

4. Disgusting. So it was stolen; no one insisted they take that down?
If that was an effigy of a black man, would anyone insist it be removed? The ignorance can be overwhelming.

6. Oh, people complained...
...but the city said it was "free speech," and as long as it was on private property, there was nothing they'd do about it.

7. Yeah...
That knocked me on my butt too! California, maybe, in some godforsaken little bigoted backwater up the hill above Chico, maybe... but here? Our local bigots aren't usually so brazen.

11. what on earth makes you think Marin Co isn't
a bigoted back water? try telling most people up there you live in Oakland and check out their reaction.

that's a pretty disgusting display for such an affluent area but remeber affluent is only a synonym for wealthy, not educated or progressive or anything else.

8. Misguided Patriotism
If you want to support the troops then post a sign that says "I support the troops" or use a yellow ribbon. It's not that complicated. Whether he meant it as a means of representing America's enemies in Iraq or not, the fact is that people perceive it to be an effigy of a Muslim, not a terrorist.

all the way, every word. Like gospel. Follow fox news like a religion. Never thinking to question.

"For me, it is strictly about Islamo-fascism."

Really? Where'd you come up with that term? Can you even define it?

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2006/09/dobson_hoping_a.html">Dobson: Hoping a Little Bit of 'IslamoFacism' Goes a Long Way (To the Polls)

Dobson shared his view of the War on Islamo-fascism by looking at the big-picture numbers. He made clear he does not believe all Muslims are terrorists, but a small percentage obviously are. With an estimated 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, Dobson said, a small percentage adds up to a lot of trouble.

He said the estimates are that 10 to 15 percent do buy into the notion that jihad calls for the killing of infidels.

"Let's say that's grossly overstated, and it may be," Dobson said. "What if it's 4 percent worldwide? What if 4 percent want to take us down and are willing to give their lives for it? When the point of negotiation is that the other person wants to kill you, there's not a whole lot to talk about. So, what if it's 4 percent? That's 48 million people in this world who want to kill us. What if it's one tenth of 1 percent? It's 12 million people that want to kill us.

"We're in a war and it's time that we recognized it."

The issue is, how and why we got into that war.....

14. This really pisses me off
Being American is not determined by degrees of race or religious beliefs. Promoting the oppression of others only reinforces those false notions.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but that level of ignorance pisses me off to no end.

18. Doesn't this dipshit know that there are Chinese Muslims, European Muslims,
African Muslims, Arab Muslims, Afghan Muslims, Asian Muslims, etc., etc.????? Which, by the way, is why the idea of Muslim profiling is a waste of time, not to mention totally crazy.

"It is a patriotic symbol," La Tray said. "It has nothing to do with race or religion"...For me, it is strictly about Islamo-fascism"...

Jeezuz, is this wingnut ever **DUMB**. First he says it's not about religion, then he says it *is* about religion. Well, HIS idea of religion, maybe -- which is skewed by insanity.

And the term "Islamo-Facism?" Gee, think he's a Rush devotee?????

21. And we have free speech as well so when we see that kind of thing...
We are going to say what we feel, the person the person who put that up is a sick racist human being. The OP did NOT call for censorship, but some people seem to think criticising someone elses words is the equivilant of censorship. It is not, free speech goes both ways.
