LEAHY: To Question Gonzalez Re "Extraordinary Renditions"-Says They're Gross Human Rights Violations
US senator seeks answers in botched Canadian terror case:
report Wed Dec 20, 3:46 PM ET

OTTAWA (AFP) - The incoming chair of the powerful US senate judiciary committee has vowed to get to the bottom of an alleged rendition of a Canadian man wrongly accused of terrorist ties, a Canadian newspaper said.

............

Senator Leahy said he would also question Gonzales about the US government's alleged widespread use of "extraordinary rendition" -- the clandestine seizing and transfer of terror suspects to allied nations that condone torture.

"It's not just this individual case," he said. "But what does this say when someone's plane stops here, they have citizenship in a neighboring country and we ship them back to Syria."

"This is beneath our country. And, it does absolutely nothing to make us more secure and it is a gross human rights violation."

7. What was done to Maher Arar was criminal
And should be treated as such, from the top down.

Unlawful arrest, kidnapping and depraved indifference to human life.

I call John Ashcroft to the stand.

9. Wouldn't that be wonderful if the legal field actually had a moral
base to work from? You know, that is what's wrong with our country, don't you? Everyone can lawyer their way out of bad decisions, as long as they have the money and the power.

The day we go after lawyers with the same impunity that we go after ordinary citizens who break conventional laws, that's when we'll bring our country out of the Bizarro Era we're in.

12. See what?
See if the dems actually do go after bushco hard. I don't think there's much doubt about that. Some of it's just human nature- beyond an actual desire to right wrongs. There's an enormous reservoir of resentment and dislike that's built up from the years of being treated contemptuously, both by the WH and by the repukes who controlled the Senate.

14. I believe that there is a new movie called "Rendition." If it is good,
perhaps more Americans will wake up to this disgraceful conduct. These Bushites are a sick bunch of war criminals.

17. Under oath?
Will Gonzales be required to testify under oath, or just questioned? How can Senator Leahy be sure he will be able to get the truth out of Gonzales? I hope the new congress will not give the Bush cabinet members a free pass as they have done in the past. Otherwise it will only be a meaningless media event.

19. Under oath.
Senator Leahy has made that absolutely clear. And he's said he won't be shy about using his new supoena powers, should he deem it necessary.

22. Excellent point
And I suspect this will be the most important change that will take place with the democrats controlling congress. People called in to testify before them will probably be made to do so in a more binding manner.

As far as Gonzalez I think it is possible he may be made to answer questions more thoroughly. I wonder, considering his previous veiled and 'I'll-tell-you-later' or 'its-national-security' testimony, if anyone has considered asking him if he is aware of the duties of his role as Attorney General or whether he confuses himself J. Edgar Hoover reincarnated.
