Rep: 'Everything depends' on bringing Christianity to Iraq
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Congressman_Everything_depends_on_bringing_Christianity_1221.html

A quotation widely circulating on the liberal blogosphere, and attributed to a United States Congressman, insists that the bringing of Christianity to Iraq is the only way to end violence there.

"Stability in Iraq," Rep. Robin Hayes (R-NC) allegedly claimed, "ultimately depends on spreading the message of Jesus Christ, the message of peace on earth, good will towards men. Everything depends on everyone learning about the birth of the Savior."

The statement reportedly appeared in The Concord Standard and Mt. Pleasant Times, and has since appeared on a number of high-profile liberal websites.

RAW STORY is working to confirm the authenticity of the claim.

OMFG!

1. I am so sick and tired
of Christianity being some big national policy. Can we get Christianity out of our goverment, out of our laws, and out of our federal budget? Please?

On The Bright Side, Sir
If 'success' in Iraq is dependent on that, the thing had better be packed in immediately, and no mistake, as the Christianizing of Iraq is about as likely to occur as the mass conversion of the Southern Baptist congregation to Buddhism....

9. That is definitely true
but people with faith often seem to refuse to accept the impossible until everyone is dead.

21. ah yes... here in alabama even now I hear distant lilting Buddhist chants from afar...
oh, never mind, those chants were from VERY AFAR and coming from my TV as it spews more propaganda on the evils of various "foreign" religions.

3. ANd we'll KEEP killing people 'til they accept Jesus as their Lord & Savior, dammit!
Having trouble finding that exhortation in the Bible, though.

7. bringing Jesus' MESSAGE is fine
nothing wrong with peace on earth & goodwill towards men.

the whole SAVIOR part is a bit offensive to everyone else.

as long as we have this type of christian involved in our foreign policy, no progress can be made.

as i am wont to say - jesus fucking christ on a pogo stick this is counterproductive.

19. Using Jesus to justify a war that has had so many justifications I lost count
is obscene. Bringing a message on tons of bombs and bullets sorta violates the message. Savior or no, the rationalization that it's OK to kill for Christ is just as bad as any fundamentalist Islamic cleric declaring a holy war on Christians.

They more I see, the more alike ALL fundies seem to be.

22. agreed, but imagine
if we had followed jesus' admonitions after 9-11:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:38-39)...Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. (Matthew 5:38-44)

we could have reacted to their communal hurt & anger with LOVE instead of fear & vengeance, and it would have been the christian thing to do. hell, it probably says that in the Koran, too, so we could have said that's why we're giving them electrical plants & wastewater treatment - because the prophet said to. it would have embarassed them instead of hardening their hatred & fear with justifiable paranoia. arabs literally think we're trying to wipe them out for the jews.

All these motards are starting to add up and do some real damage to the country IMO. Just look at the king of motards, George Bush. Leading without a paddle.

16. I'll ask the same question as I did during the Fallujah battle
"Since when did Operation Iraqi Freedom become the Fourteenth Crusade?"

Nearly all Muslims know the story of the last time a leader of the West called for a Crusade to convert or destroy the infidels.
