Ride with Zulu for Mardi Gras 2007!
For those who have wanted to ride and didn't feel that they could due to high membership - here's a great chance!

Eighty percent of the membership of Zulu was significantly impacted by
Hurricane Katrina, and many have still not been able to return to New
Orleans. As a result, they are again offering a limited number of riding
positions to non-krewe members, both men and women.

For a fee of $1,500.00, riders will receive a complete package, including
all throws, a costume, makeup and an invitation to the Lundi Gras Party.
Those who choose to ride on the first level of a float will also receive
decorated coconuts "the original" inspiration for our Muses glitter shoes!

For those (if any!) not familiar with them, Zulu is a predominately African
American krewe, formed in 1909, which has had a major impact on Mardi Gras
history. Zulu rolls early on Fat Tuesday, before Rex and you must arrive
prior to float loading for makeup, so this is a very early morning.

Riding in Zulu is a great way to spend Mardi Gras Day. The crowds will be
overwhelming and you will be helping a fellow krewe in need. If you are
interested in riding and experiencing the spirit of Zulu on Carnival Day,
please contact Lester Pollard, Jr., at lesterpoll@hotmail.com, 393-2185, or
432-5919.

I have a few cousins that ride in Bacchus - they say it's an experience!

1. That isn't a terrible deal....
Throws alone can be up to several hundred dollars. Krewe dues are anywhere from $500 to $750 per year (assuming you know someone to get you in).

Heck, I'm in a Krewe in Baton Rouge that's $350 per year but I've probably spent close to $1500 with fundraisers and all.

2. I think Bacchus is
about 2000.00 after it's all said and done. That's the going rate around New Orleans. I know it's cheaper to ride in Slidell and the Gretna area, but Metairie and New Orleans have bigger fees and such to pay. I think it's a great way to keep Mardi Gras going strong and it can give non members a chance to experience riding with a krewe. As you said, assuming you know someone who can get you in.

3. I am very close to a Bacchus member, actually...
The dues aren't all that much, but they hit you throughout the year with various donation requests- that's what mine does. I'd join Bacchus, but the one I'm in now fits my life better (and is local). We don't do any parades- just a ball.
