Waas under attack...
As an investigative reporter and independent journalist, I have pursued a career course of independence so as to not be beholden to anyone. A grandiose notion, perhaps, and I will perhaps leave it to others to judge my work against the ideal. But the independence that emboldens my journalism has also proved to be its greatest vulnerability, as the following episode illustrates.

Email correspondence made public by Wonkette on Tuesday, as well as a draft of a story about me by the Washington City Paper, shows that one of my former research assistants, Bryan Keefer, provided the paper with confidential materials about stories that I was pursuing--but didn't write--during his time with me while I was a freelance reporter. The former assistant is also quoted in the story draft as claiming to know the identity of a confidential source.

The last claim is the most disturbing. I have never shared with an intern or assistant any information as to the identity of a confidential source. Most professional journalists share the identities of their confidential sources only with their editors. In my case, I would only do so with the permission of the sources themselves.

If a researcher for The New York Times or Time or Newsweek walked out the door with confidential files regarding yet unpublished stories, or attempted to disclose the identity of someone they thought was a source for one of the publication's reporters, they would almost certainly face the universal condemnation of the journalistic community.

1. HOLY Fourth Estate, Lala!
City Paper has certainly gone down the drain since I lived there, hasn't it?

I got too angry to read the rest of Waas' long post, but from what I read, they really do seem to have quite the agenda, don't they?

can you spell set up, maybe?

people who don't know much about Waas should look back at some of the seminal stories he's covered, including the Plame case. I wonder how much the timing of this has to do with the upcoming trial, cause Waas did actual reporting on this, and, IIRC, came to the conclusion that Rove was at least as culpable as Cheney/Libby on this.

can you not wait for this trial, and to see Cheney's fat, lying, thrombosed ass on the witness stand?

or do you think the worst SCOTUS in the history of the country (fitting to have that troika, isn't it: worst president, worst congress, and worst SCOTUS, all at the same time?), will keep him out of court, just as they kept his energy papers from public view? can't wait to see the public reaction to that.

4. Yes, many people have been "set-up" in many fields since recorded
human history began, and you and I and many others are among them. That being acknowledged, keep on fearlessly doing what you are doing knowing that you certainly aren't alone.

5. I was wondering about Murray
Hadn't heard from him in a while. He's a hero as far as I'm concerned. It's interesting he would become a target just at the time the Libby trial is about to begin.

7. wonder if the identity of this person might have something to do with this:
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 01:49 AM by Gabi Hayes
One senior government official familiar with the discussions between Bush and Cheney -- but who does not have firsthand knowledge of Bush's interview with prosecutors -- said that Bush told the vice president to "Get it out," or "Let's get this out," regarding information that administration officials believed would rebut Wilson's allegations and would discredit him.

A person with direct knowledge of Bush's interview refused to confirm that Bush used those words, but said that the first official's account was generally consistent with what Bush had told Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.

Libby, in language strikingly similar to Bush's words, testified to the federal grand jury in the leak case that Cheney had told him to "get all the facts out" that would defend the administration and discredit Wilson. Portions of Libby's grand jury testimony were an exhibit in a recent court filing by Fitzgerald.

Dana Perino, a spokesperson for the White House, declined to comment. James E. Sharpe, an attorney for President Bush, did not return a phone message left at his home on Saturday. The special prosecutor's office also declined to comment.

http://news.nationaljournal.com/articles/0703nj1.htm

gee, I wonder why James Sharpe ATTORNEY FOR PRESIDENT BUSH, not only failed to comment, but didn't return calls to Waas.

remember, like James St. Claire, Sharpe is an outside gun, a DEFENSE ATTORNEY that Bush hired for what reasons he won't say. wonder what that might be?

does this go all the way to the "top?" clearly it does, regardless of whether one considers the top to be Bush, or the tail that wags the dog, Cheney.

just ask John Nichols what he thinks about this

9. Yep.
Waas had opened a door with a couple of reports in particular in the summer. This article details an ugly form of responding to his making things uncomfortable for some powerful forces.

What a terrible ordeal for Murray Waas.

Must be why he hadn't posted on his blog for awhile.
