The principals of democracy and freedom are not “fundamentally Christian beliefs” (
“Servicemembers are servants,” letter, Dec. 18). In fact, they stem from ancient Rome and Greece, and the Iroquois Confederacy, all pagan civilizations at the time.
The letter illustrates the writer’s opinion that only Christians are capable of pursuing freedom, democracy, tolerance and love. The book of Genesis in the Bible teaches that we are all created equal in G-d’s image. The ideas of a brotherhood of nations and that peace is superior to war are from the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah. The “Golden Rule” often attributed to Jesus (“Love thy neighbor as thyself”) is from Leviticus. These concepts are not Christian in origin.
