By default I'm on the libertarian side of conservatism, i.e. smaller government, lower taxes, less regulation, etc. but ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT the legislating sin part of the religious right and, of course, pro choice.

That being said, I also see, as any reasonable open-eyed person does, that we have problems in this country. Social problems, healthcare problems, environmental problems, just to touch a few general areas. My view is, again as a reasonable person, how do we find solutions to these problems before us? What counts is solving the problem, as much as possible in sync with what I said in the first paragraph, but foremost coming up with a solution. If in the final analysis that requires more government, more taxes, more regulation, then so be it. But at least we should do our best to minimize in this regard and be as efficient and not wasteful as possible.

And I use the words "liberal" and "progressive" interchangeably to describe myself. "Liberal" is traditional, of course, but I also like "progressive" because it makes it so easy to label the opposition what they are, namely REGRESSIVE!
