I'm LIBERAL and I love Christmas!!!!!!!!!!
I get really sick of repukes saying we hate christmas

I go to church,

I am in our BAPTIST church's orchestra. Our christmas eve program is going to be broadcast on TV

I love Christmas and it is CHRISTmas not x-mas

and ...

gasp... I believe in Jesus

I am sick and tired of those "holier than thou" repukes saying we don't believe or hate christmas and I have never advocated people dying like they do/did when Senator Johnson was sick

My wife is to blame. We love the old christmas specials and have all of them on DVD. Don't tell her but I'm just really extending my Solstice celebrations by a few days..

I'm a liberal Christian who loves
Vince Guaraldi's 'Charley Brown Christmas' CD!

Heck, Linus is one of the few around who "gets"
Christmas, even a Robert Smigel skit on SNL
acknowledges that.

I don't really consider myself a Christian, for various reasons, but I love the Christmas season. Christmas is my favorite holiday. Now, if I can only get my husband to love it as much as I do. LOL

Merry Christmas, DU! :bounce:

4. Isn't it incredibly sad
that the so called "christians" amongst us go to such incredible lengths to make themselves miserable at Christmas time. And how do they know we hate Christmas? Research? Intellectual curiousity? Of course not. Their handlers on right wing hate radio and TV tell them we do because they know that "christians" have a great need to consider themselves martyrs (when they are not hating others.)

6. Me too! And I never claimed to be a Christian
but probably behave better than most of my never miss church on Sunday neighbors.

I LOVE the reminder to work toward love, peace, justice, and to be generous. Love the decorations. Love the music.

Just wish the spirit was practiced more the rest of the year by the multitudes of RW believers
A little more working to ease the burden of the poor, please. A little more hard truth to the rich who abuse others. A little more empathy and kindness daily. A little more pausing to behold the miracles around us EVERY DAY. A little more consideration and protection for what needs protecting.

A lot more peace and goodwill

EVERY DAY- a bit of Christmas.

Liberals really do embody the spirit of the season all year.

10. I also enjoy Christmas
BTW, you do realize the "X" in Xmas is not an attempt to take "Christ" out of it? Rather, the "X" is from the Greek symbol for Christ. Just clearing up a misconception that many Christians have - I used to have my father always tell me how "Xmas" was such a negative term.

Despite my post earlier today, I do enjoy the Christmas season. I detest the over commercialization of Christmas, but I enjoy spending it with people close to me.

20. No problem - the "X" actually stands for Xristos
Which was the Greek word for Christ.

Another explanation is that the the first letter in Christ is "Chi" in Greek, which is represented by the letter X.

"Xmas" came about at a time when Christians were actually persecuted for their beliefs
during the Roman Empire. One of the few times that Christians have ever been persecuted. Certain sects of Christianity have been persecuted by other Christians (Catholics vs. Protostants) but this, imo, was the only time that Christianity as a whole religion has been actively persecuted.

Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 03:24 PM by melissinha
The music majors did the solos and orchestra, and the rest of us got to sing "Amen" "Hallelujah" and my favorite "For unto us a child is born".

Thanks for the reminder badgerpup, I need to go pull that out and sing....

But I am a Christian, just a "non-practicing" one, if the churches didn't go all Christian Rock and stuck to Handel and the Hymns I'd be happy.

Happy Holidays from Tux!!!

19. This may be off subject, but
we have a gentleman here by the name of Glenn Poshard. Mr. Poshard use to be a U.S. Senator, but is now the president of Southern Illinois University. Mr. Poshard is my idea of a "good ole country boy" with a Ph.D. Now he is not the fake country boy, like toby keith and such. He is just a nice person with a common touch.

During the Obama 2004 campaign, Barack was running late so they had Poshard, who was one of the speakers that night, extend his speech to fill the time. Poshard begin speaking about his childhood and his religious roots. He went on to tell about how the churches had changed over the last few years. How the baptist church that he had went to for years had gone from being liberal to now being very conservative. He said the atmosphere of the church had become so threatening that the liberals had either left the church or were too afraid to speak out. Tears came to his eyes as he spoke about the loss of Christianity among "Christians". (This is my concept of what he said, and not exact wording) He spoke with anger of how the conservative republicans had taken control of many of the churches and how they portrayed the democrats as being Godless. The hall was so still as he spoke, but the heads were all nodding.

22. Sounds pretty much like Christ's message
I consider many religious leaders to be modern day versions of the Pharisees. So many Christians are more concerned with how people ought to act, dress, and put such high emphasis on minute details, they forget what the overall mission of the church is.

21. Christmas is OK
I prefer Halloween and Valentine's Day, but each to his or her own.

What I do like about Xmas is the decorations people put out, like the lights. The gifts are nice, too, plus it is the one occasion where one hears from people not otherwise heard from.

Plus I enjoy seeing people having a good time, like today. I had to deliver my grades at school and it so happens the school knocked off at noon for their holiday party. There were homemade goodies, red and green tablecloths, people milling about, having animated conversations. You could tell they were having a good time and that made me feel good. :)

39. I have a problem with all the holidays,
including the two you mentioned, due to the commercialization of them. Luckily for me, this year I am stuck here at home, going out only once in a great while, and am not bombarded by the capitalistic version of what Christmas should be. Because of my isolation, I am allowed to feel happy for the holidays and enjoy the extra time with my family. No bah humbugs this year, just a sigh of relief that I am still alive.

Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 04:13 PM by maxsolomon
and, from appearances, so does everyone else.

christmas was grafted onto yuletide in n. europe, and everyone carried on as before; tannebaums, feasting, mistletoe, presents, lights. all the things that non-christians like, too.

jesus was pretty cool, and i believe he existed, but its Mithra's birthday, or Sol Invictus', as much as it is the mythological day of the savior's virgin birth.

but yule resonates with me much more since i've moved north to the 44th paralell - tied as it is to the solstice.

GOD JUL!

53. Believe me when I tell you I'm often conflicted. One of the planes I fly cost
15 million dollars, more than I'll ever earn in my life. There are some people who won't accept me as a standby pilot (that's mostly what I do, for a number of different owners) and there are some for whom I refuse to work. Politics and religion enter into it, as does my refusal to wear a uniform. But most of the outfits are willing to overlook my idiosyncracies (and politics) because they know they and their people are safe in my hands. I'm not rich either, but I'm a happy guy. :D

They associate the words "hate" and "war" with Christmas and insist on turning a time of healing into a time of controversy. I refuse to respond to such bullshit. There is NO question that tolerant, freedom-loving people would support the idea of Joy to the World and Peace on Earth, Goodwill, yadda, yadda.
These arguments fall flat on their face. Do not support them by denying the accusation.

66. I like it too, especially the lights--
=--now that most people in the Pacific NW have their power back. A few days ago in the cold and dark, I was much more into BAH HUMBUG!. The singing, getting together with family. You don't even have to believe in the religious aspects to enjoy those as well. A seasonally revised Zen parable--

First there is a Santa Claus.
Then there is no Santa Claus.
Then there is.
