1. Mind Set!
On Saturday, December 23 at 8:00 am and Monday, December 25 at 2:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mind Set!
John Naisbitt

In an event at Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver, John Naisbitt discusses his book "Mind Set!," in which he recommends eleven mind sets, including "focus on the score of the game," "understand how powerful it is not to have to be right," and "don't get so far ahead of the parade they don't know you are in it." During his remarks, he posits that the world is shifting from a collection of nation-states to a collection of economic domains, e.g. automotive and pharmaceutical domains. In the modern world entrepreneurs, companies, and cities are more important than nations. Mr. Naisbitt also shares his opinions on population patterns, fundamentalism, and climate change.

Futurist John Naisbitt is the author of "Megatrends," published in 1982. "Megatrends" was at the top of the New York Times bestseller list for more than two years and sold more than eight million copies. His other books include "Global Paradox" and "Megatrends 2000." Mr. Naisbitt served in both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and was an executive at IBM and Eastman Kodak.

turn on the tube again. That sounds interesting (though bad for my wallet, because I'm sure it'll make me head for the bookstore).

114. This was Great
This was a really interesting talk, and probably a great book. It was not just about the building, but about the papers found there, too, many of which were reminiscences of staff, official guards, and others, about the Lincolns, the Civil War, and other events of the time. There is a lot of new research uncovered here, extending to a new appreciation of Edwin M. Stanton, the Secretary of War, who tends to still be considered a Lincoln enemy, even though it wasn't true. A lot of the planning of the Civil War, the writing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and other very important things, were actually done here at this Old Soldier's Home, and not at the White House, and a lot of time was apparently spent there. The author seems really well-informed and up on Lincoln scholarship, (she was actually once a researcher for Edward R. Murrow), and has added to the restoration of the reputation of Mary Lincoln as a human being, and of the Lincoln marriage as a good and happy one. One thing mentioned was the statement by Lincoln's third secretary, Stoddard I think it was, who mentioned that Mary Lincoln went to visit soldiers in hospitals, brought them things, and wrote letters to them, as much as anyone else, but that she didn't hire a press agent, and so she never got the credit she deserved. A lot of new stories like that have apparently been uncovered by the papers found in this "Lincoln Cottage," as it has been taken apart and restored over the past several years, and it is going to be re-opened as a tourist attraction next October, I think it was. There were many really good descriptions given of Lincoln's character and personality, and many quotes about it from others; this seems to be a really well-researched book. I really enjoyed this program.

Patriarch: George Washington and the New American Nation
Richard Norton Smith

The book "Patriarch: George Washington and the New American Nation" documents Washington’s years as president, between 1789 and 1796. Author Richard Norton Smith describes the first president of the fledgling US government as an incorruptible man and a powerful mediator between opposing political groups. During his term, he contends that Washington acted as a mediator between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton and skillfully dealt with foreign and domestic policy. The interview with the author was in 1993.

Presidential historian Richard Norton Smith was the director of the Hoover Presidential Library until 2001, after which he was selected as the first executive director of the Lincoln Presidential Library. He is the author of "Colonel: The Life and Legend of Robert R. McCormick, 1880-1955" and "Harvard Century: The Making of a University to a Nation."

113. This was Extremely Moving...
This was a speech given by Art Buchwald this month to the Wesley United Methodist Church, Washington, D.C., after writing a new memoir on a short time in a hospice. Apparently, recently, Buchwald suffered kidney failure (I don't know from what, maybe diabetes), and for some reason, refused dialysis. Buchwald went to a hospice for a few weeks, then did not die but regained some health, but lost at least one leg. I do not know what the status of the kidney failure is, and it was not mentioned here.

This program, almost a half-hour, began with the usual Buchwald wit and political references, a huge laugh at an anti-Bush remark, that turned to appaluse, about how one good thing about dying is not to have to look at George Bush's face again, and other typical Buchwald wit. Suddenly though, because of the grim seriousness of the actual topic--I think when Buchwald mentioned a few friends and how they did not want to say good-bye, thereabouts--Buchwald opened up something very deep inside, and started to cry. Things got so deep, so quick, so real and honest, that it was like a precious revelation, of the meaning of things. A few more times, during answers, Buchwald cried, even sobbed, talking about hospice care, the families who are so sad and devastated, the love of hospice workers, and what a terrible and hard job it is.

This was a wonderful audience of Buchwald-readers, who were not embarrassed, did not turn away, stayed with it, and returned a real compassion the whole time; it was very, very reassuring to behold--that sometimes, people will stay with you, and be there. At a scary, grim time like the end of life, sometimes all you can do is cry, and ask for comfort, and we will all be there someday. Anyone who has taken care of someone who was dying, knows this sad, stressed, scary state of mind, and it was conveyed honestly and clearly here. People may want to turn away and avoid the topic, which is very difficult to face, but a little bit of you has to be aware of what we are all heading for, even just a little bit, at the back of your mind.

My late Mom, whom I still miss, loved reading Art Buchwald, (also Calvin Trillin and especially Garrison Keillor), and so when I first caught this program yesterday, very late afternoon, I was surprised and unprepared for what the speech would become. It was the real, true face of the end of life--scary, sad, not wanting it to happen, comforted by others, and finally, experiencing it. The part where Buchwald asks what is going to happen to all of these people (who can't afford hospice care), what is going to happen to them, and starts crying, was a beautiful moment of redemption. I ended up feeling comforted by this program and its horrible topic, and I wish our society would address these things openly this way all the time. We would be a hell of a lot healthier for it.

This will re-air at 9 PM tonight.

Mysteries of the Middle Ages: The Rise of Feminism, Science, and Art from the Cults of Catholic Europe
Thomas Cahill
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/1106/btv112306_1b.ram

In "Mysteries of the Middle Ages" author Thomas Cahill takes a look at the rebirth of culture in Europe that followed the period of time known as the Dark Ages. During an event hosted by the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC, Mr. Cahill presents a slideshow of medieval Roman Catholic images. He explains that placing the image of the Virgin Mary at the center of their churches marked the first time men began treating women with dignity and a major turning point in what would become modern science was the belief that communion bread could be the body of Jesus.

Thomas Cahill is the author of "How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe," "The Gifts of the Jews: How a Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed the Way Everyone Thinks and Feels," "Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus," "Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea: Why the Greeks Matter."

Prop an art book up on a chair so as to step back and take a look from a distance?

93. The Saint John's Bible
The first illuminated page of The Saint John's Bible.
The illustrated passage tells the story of the geneology of Jesus as told in the Gospel according to Mathew. The artist, Donald Jackson, depicts the family tree as a Jewish menorah surrounded by intertwined spirals suggestive of DNA chains, and names written in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.

95. Check out this thread on Shakespeare's affect on the brain...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=228x25935

"Shakespeare uses a linguistic technique known as functional shift that involves, for example using a noun to serve as a verb. Researchers found that this technique allows the brain to understand what a word means before it understands the function of the word within a sentence. This process causes a sudden peak in brain activity and forces the brain to work backwards in order to fully understand what Shakespeare is trying to say."

100. Wow. Now I understand why I became a Shakespearean.
That's how my brain works. No kidding. I used to drive my math teachers nuts because I'd intuit the result and had to work backwards to figure out why it was right.

Thanks, Kurovski! Amazing.

(And have you ever stopped to think what it would be like to live with the keymaster? "keymaster, what are all these long distance calls? I thought I filled up the tank?! Where is the cream cheese?")

All will be well, and all manner of thing will be well.
