1. Maybe it has something to do with Orgasm for Peace Day?
LOL.

Seriously, hope it was just a tremblor, no damage.

Not sure where the epicenter was yet. I keep checking the USGS, but they haven't updated it just yet.

Prelim siting looks like Hayward fault area.

It was just a good size bump out here east of the tunnel.

13. A rapid up and down jolt. Never felt one quite like that before except
the Loma Prieta's preliminary tremor in '89. :scared:

But the dreadful back and forth shaking that followed that time was immediate, so I don't think there's anything to worry about. :)

I only got a little bump -- just a bit of sideways movement.

22. It was definitely more impact than the one of same mag. the other day
That one my son felt, but I didn't, and there was no accompanying noise. This one rattled the house. I wonder if it's the same area, but a different fault.

on this Victorian did an up-down thud at once. I'd hate to see how these two react to a bigger one, though. They're so freaking skittish, they both run when I drop things or shout at GWB's ugly mug when it happens to unexpectedly darken my t.v. :D

16. I'm in Oakland. Definitely felt it.
What surprised me was the 'boom' that preceded it; it was almost like an explosion or the sound of something massive striking the ground and waves of energy radiating out from it. As another noted, there was a smaller quake here on the Hayward fault on Wednesday evening around 7PM.

26. I'm in Berkeley and I felt it strong.
I just had to make a post about it, too.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2970090

I just felt the second temblor a couple of minutes ago. It was much like the first one, which occurred about four days ago. It was a short, sharp shock. It lasted only a few seconds.

I survived the Loma Prieta earthquake in Santa Cruz in 1989. I've been through 7.0. I don't want to see 8.0. The one about four days ago was a 3.8 and was centered here in Berekeley along the Hayward Fault line.

I always have to wonder if these little ones are releasing pressure. Or are they shifting tectonic plate build ups from deep below? Are these the precursor rumblings of a biggie which is coming soon?

Sigh. I guess I'll know soon enough - no sense in worrying. But I am kind of feeling it...the way I was on that very day in 1989 when I refused to go on the spelunking trip we had planned for that afternoon "Because my stomach didn't feel right about it."

Ah well, in Santa Cruz we learn to ride the waves when they come.

31. They are also doing a fair bit of earthquake-proof retro-fitting.
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 02:31 AM by StrictlyRockers
And they have a massive expansion project planned with tons of large new buildings, high-rise student dormatories, etc. And all of this new construction is not far from the Hayward Fault which geologists and seismologists say is due for a big "correction". They came up with some statistics which concluded that there was something like a 60% likelihood of a 6.0 or higher in the next fifty years on that fault. (I'll look for a link to that article now.)

Another brainchild idea from the Cal Berkeley school for the gifted...
(I went to UCSC so don't blame me.) hehe :)

Ok, I found a link to an article from 2000 which argues against the reports I remember hearing about the Hayward Fault being likely to produce a major earthquake.
http://www.lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/hayward-unlocked.html

<...>
The new study modifies the assumption of the Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities, who as recently as 1990 proposed that the odds are one-to-one that, in 30 years or less, an earthquake of magnitude 7 or larger will occur along the Hayward Fault. Such an event could cost thousands of lives and many millions of dollars.

<...>

So, my memory was not that far off in remembering the alarming statistics, but there appears to be some difference of opinion among the experts on this one.

33. You just had a second micro aftershock...
2.2, apparently. Y'all probably wouldn't have felt it unless you were right on top of it.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/nc51177104.php

Think some earth spirit is celebrating the solstice a bit much right now? Hopefully, as you said, it's just pressure being released easy instead of hard.

Look to the candles, just in case.

Haele

They're really no big deal here.

30. Visiting SF tonight
Hadn't felt a noticeable quake in nearly six years. This was sharp and strong, and over very quickly, like someone had fallen down the stairs really hard.

But now I'm wide awake and all jittery. Perhaps this is a sign that I shouldn't really consider moving back here!

37. I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE

Carole King/Martika
Written by: Carole King

I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around

Ooh, baby, when I see your face
Mellow as the month of May
Oh, darling, I can't stand it
When you look at me that way

I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around

Oh, darling, when you're near me
And you tenderly call my name
I know that my emotions
Are something I just can't tame
I've just got to have you, baby

I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I just lose control
Down to my very soul
I get a hot and cold all over
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down,
Tumbling down, tumbling down...

38. I was at the 'Stick for Loma Prieta.
I sure do not like any quake near the Hayward Fault. It is just off the charts in terms of potential damage. I can't count the major structures that would fail if it had a jolt of the same magnitude as that one in '89.

48. Ooookay, this morning's one caught my attention
I mean, last night, I figured was just a coincidence - same magnitude, pratically in the same location. And by the way, it did feel sharper than the first tremblor in my area (SF - Sunset district) - The first felt like an exegerrated rumble, like a truck going by really close. The second actually felt like something had hit the building and the rumbling sound was, I don't know, "sharper", louder? Anyway, with this 3rd one - now I have earthquake on my mind, and its hard not to imagine that something might be giving way at that particular location, allowing all this movement. The fact that its happening on the Hayward don't help any either. Ah, well - we'll see huh? Hoping everyone here from the SF area have their earthquake plans in place.
