Surrender to the War on Christmas
Let me preface this by saying the war on christmas is a pile of crap. It's become the 'seasonal issue' and just an excuse for some "morans" to adorn themselves in garments of rightous outrage.

so here's the solution:

According to one recent article - conservatives "give" more to charities than liberals.

Another article states the average household spends $800 on christmas presents.

since Christmas is also the season of giving - I propose that no one, this means all Americans, do not buy christmas gifts and donate the money to charity. Do not decorate your homes, do not buy christmas trees, do not buy 'special foods' for christmas dinner - instead take that money you would have spent and donate it to a charity.

this is not a call to boycott - but rather an embargo against the commercial and politization of the season. It's surrendering to the season of giving to the less fortunate.

Contact the stores and companies who sell/make the products you would have normally bought at christmas and tell them you are joining in the war on christmas and have donated the money to charity in their name - be sure to mention you are thanking Bill O'reilly and other pundits for their influence and for opening your eyes to the real meaning of christmas.

I realize this is probably too late to have any effect on this year's war on christmas -- but it's something to keep in mind for next year

1. And to maintain the sanctity of marriage
let us ban all divorce. Talk about fucking with the heads of "christian conservatives" in America. What? No Christmas lights? No presents? No divorce? And you call that "christianity?"

Here, here, I'm all for it.

7. The Puritans would have agreed with you
They actually banned any Christmas celebrations, and of course had no divorce, either. They even insisted that folks work on Christmas, unless it fell on a Sunday. So if you'd like, mess with conservative Christians' heads and remind them that the "old time religion" of their forefathers banned all the commercialization that they seem now to worship.

4. economics of Christmas War
just imagine a store like Walmart or Penny's or Sears, and manufacturers like Sony, Kodak, Dell all receiving letters saying that instead of patronizing their store or buying their products - the money has been given to ______ charity.

you've 'seen the light' (thanks to Bill O'reilly and other RW's) and now recognize you've been unwitting participant in the "liberal" war on christmas. You are wishing ______ store/company a very Merry Christmas and $--- has been donated to ________ charity in their name as well as Billo's...

I realize that people do have kids, and do not want to disappoint them at christmas - so buy the kids their gifts, but don't buy your spouse, s/o, parents, co-workers, friends a gift. Donate that money to a charity.

if you feel weird not buying gifts for everyone - then only spend 1/2 of what you would normally spend and donate the rest

the point of this exercise is to surrender to Billo's farcical war by putting the spirit of christmas back into christmas with more than words murmured by a store clerk.

best case scenario - the sponsors of Billo's show and similar shows will pull their advertising budget..

8. You could get kids involved in this too, though
When I was young, I got one big toy for Christmas and the rest were clothes that I needed. But I was encouraged to make presents, especially baked goods, and went around caroling and visiting old folks who were alone that time of year. I didn't realize it at the time, but now I know that that gift of time and attention meant a lot to those lonely people.

No reason why kids can't be raised like that nowadays, is there?

5. flame away, but
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 10:14 AM by DrDan
I happen to like Christmas

I like a decorated tree
I like buying gifts for my family
I like Christmas dinner
I like (gulp) Christmas carols

I do not like that the merchants start Christmas now in October
And I do not like it over-commercialized, but overall, I like it

Seems to me this embargo is as loony as the right-wing-whacko's "war"

6. Actually, I've done that
My boss wanted to get me a present for Christmas the first year I worked there. I insisted he donate to Refugees International in my name. Sadly, he has refused to do it again, insisting that "that's not a present". But I never decorate for the holidays, nor buy special foods. I do try to donate to a charity, though. I just hadn't realized until your excellent post that I am surrendering to the War on Christmas in a good way! Thanks!
