I sincerely hope we are now purged of all racists and bigots both overt and covert.

Yes, I know about Byrd, but he has publicly repudiated his past.

1. The fact he switched to Republican says a lot
He knows the Republican Party welcomes elements like him.

9. You're right.
he's switched parties back and forth several times, he cosidered himself an Independent for a while too, I guess he's found his true calling with the GOP.

2. Dixie Democrats were another party, entirely
The reason the south went Democratic in most elections prior to the Johnson administration (and for some time after, they're kinda slow) is because of the bitter, post Civil War opposition to the party of Lincoln. Make no mistake, the only thing Democratic about them was the initial after their names.

When people talk about the decades long Democratic domination of the House, I have to laugh at them. Those Dixie Democrats, called boll weevil Democrats by their peers, generally voted with the repressive and oppressive GOP on most issues. Yes, they produced a few stars, Sen. Sam Ervin of NC comes to mind, but mostly they were just what they are today on the other side of the aisle.

Maybe you are, but I'm not.

Did I mention that the South bashing on this board is completely over-the-top?

11. I noticed that too
Sad, too....In Virginia there are Republicans who are gonna vote Republican anyhow. Believe it or not, as evidenced by the election of Senator Webb, there are also Virginians who vote for forward-thinking Democrats, not just Dixiecrats.

There are also Virginians who are not Democrats but could be open to voting Democratic. What is sad is South-bashing rhetoric on a Democratic board like this one....is this gonna make someone from the South more....or LESS likely to consider the Democratic Party as the party that represents his/her interests? Hint: you don't get people to think you represent their interests by bashing them for being Southerners!

There is also some religion bashing going on....not the objections people have to the excesses of the radical right, but over the top bashing of anyone who would be so "stupid" as to be religious, as if it were the mark of idiocy. Well, let's picture yourself a Southern church- going voter....again, will bashing Southerners and bashing religion gonna make for thoughts that the Democratic Party represents their interests?

Sad thing is that States in the South, at that includes Virginia, could be open to inroads by the Democratic Party but some of us make this a more difficult task.

14. I think that was part of Rove's strategy with the African American
voters in the South, many of whom consider themselves devout Christians. Focus on issues such as same sex marriage to try and alienate them from the Democratic Party.

The problem is, the GOP is still overtly racist in it's overall policy and philosophy, so not too many inroads have been made.

I don't get too wound up about the Southern bashers here. Hey, I'm from the South, my ancestors were Confederates, there's not a whole lot I can do about that, I can only atone for myself. By the way, a good majority of the Northerners were racists too by today's standards. Let's focus on the here and now as far as I'm concerned.

5. No, he wasn't a Dixie-crat...
in fact he was a supporter of Doug Wilder. I think he just has severe bigotry against non-christians.

12. "bigotry against Christians????"
We can't possibly be talking about the same man, the one in the Senate in the 60s.
