Rapture ready board: "Do the words "happy holidays" HACK YOU OFF?"
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 05:28 PM by Bluebear
:crazy:

For some reason, every time I hear "happy holidays" or see it in an ad, it makes me mad. I guess I'm just so sick of the pc in this country I can't take it anymore. I'd give anything for some company to come on TV and say, "we're Chrsitians, so Merry Christmas, and if you're Jewish, please have a very nice Chanukah".

Am I the only one feeling this way?

So to all of you, HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
====

I too notice it alot but I try not to let it bother me because if I do I will get too worked up and it just ruins Christmas for me.

====

It only makes me roll my eyes when it is said to me.

It makes me extremely angrified when someone "corrects me" in a rude tone and says it. I actually had someone say the word no in front of it the other day "No.......Happy Holidays".
====

I almost got into a match with 2 tweens at the Salvation Army bucket at Cabellas. I put money in, they said, "happy holidays". I said, "Merry Christmas!" They repeated (kinda snotty) "Happy Holidays!" I said, "Merry Christmas". I left it at that. You can't win a war of the attitudes with someone else's pre-teen.

=====

I have heard the PC groupies uttering the "Happy Holidays" stuff. Yes, it does rattle my cage. And I look them straight in the eyes and say, "And a Merry Chistmas to you with God"s blessings".

However, at my Credit Union the teller wished me a "Merry Christmas" and I replied "Thank you for saying that". She looked puzzled at first and then got the message. She said, "Oh, you mean I did not say Happy Holiday.

I have now started to thank others for saying "Merry Christmas "and have found it makes an impression.

Proudly Politically Incorrect,
RecordKeeper
=====

I was in a department store, Lord and Taylor, the other day. My eyes nearly fell out of my head. On the collar of a clerk, was a button, about the size of a quarter. In script with a border around it was, "Jesus is the Reason for the Season". I congratulated her for wearing it.

She admitted she was fed up with this Happy Holiday stuff. When she put it on that morning, she KNEW she could be fired and thought, Oh, then I'll work somewhere else." No one working there said anything. I could feel her meekness ... not a wusp but controlled STRENGTH. Meekness is controlled strength.

She was a gentle black lady - in her late 50's or early sixties. I loved just beng near her. She is a GENUINE Christian .... you could just feel her peace. Her smile was warm and sincere ... we talked ... and I asked her, do you think He's coming soon? Her face lite up like a Christmas tree and she quielty said, "yes, the signs are all there". With that I gave her a hug and said I hope you're right ... if we don't meet again on earth, I'll get to know you better in heaven.

=====

I found a strange thing happening to me this Christmas season and it worried me.
I found that when people said "happy holiday" to me I found it quite natural sounding to my ear and not foriegn as it had a year or two ago. Have I changed that much??? I apparently have been "Happy Holidayized".......yikes.

Merry Christmas to Y'all, 4everHis
=====

I think my new response to "Happy Holidays!",

will be...

"Merry Christmas, and Happy HOLY days to you too!"

Maybe we can show them the irony of thinking "happy holidays" is PC when its even more politically incorrect!

=====

You know, I kinda' like that.

You're move, liberals

57. Stinky dog farts are annoying!
Rush hour traffic is REALLY annoying.
Christmas music (to me) is annoying.

But oddly, I don't really give a s*** whether someone says Happy Holidays or Happy Hannukah or Merry Christmas. I'm not religious, either.

All I ask is that they please wait until after Dec. 22nd to begin saying "Merry Christmas".

He was a barrel of laughs. He passed away earlier this year.
Guests would crack up at his loud rips, though.

Or was it Sophocles?

72. What an excellent dog! I adopted him as an adult, from Animal Control.
He was obviously abandoned. He was found wandering around, with bald spots, bony, emaciated, in early January 2002. It was snowy that year.

I went to the animal shelter looking to adopt a dog who I could take on walks and runs. At first glance he looked like an "old man", graying around the muzzle. I took other dogs on mini-walks, but I found them to be poorly trained. Finally, I took the graying rottweiler for a mini-walk, and he turned out be a very well trained dog!

He bounced back into health in a few months. He lived for another 3 and a half years, before getting cancer on his face. He was a great dog.

17. Amazing
They now use "Merry Christmas" as a sort of verbal assault on anyone who wants to acknowledge that there are other holidays in December and early January.

Why be so coy? Why not just say what they mean: "You are going to Hell and I'm not! NANANANANANA!"

59. "Merry Christmas" intended as an insult
Recently, I saw a newbie on DU use "Merry Christmas" as an intended jab to anyone he debated with, as though we liberals are going to get chafed at the un-PC-ness, or something. Give me a f'ing break. I called that person on it, but of course he denied using it as a jab.

91. Oh, so now there is a war on "Happy Holidays?"
It used to be ok to say "happy holidays" in the first half of the 2oth century. A most popular song was sung by Bing and Perry in those day. The title was "Happy Holidays." No one seemed to have a problem with it then. So who thought up this war on "Happy Holidays" to further divide a divided country? Must have been the "Christians?"

10. Merry Christmas said by a salesperson is just a way to
commercialize a season that should be holy. I think everyone should make their own gifts and not buy anything at Christmas. When we give our home-made gift we should say Happy Holy Day. That's the way to truly get and give the Christmas spirit.

I think that's what I'll say to the next holier than thou person who brings up this issue.

21. This is, after all,
the HOLIDAY Season.

This means Christmas, Hanukkah, Solstice, Yule, and other events occur during this particular time of the year.

The fact that, in the past, Christmas got the lions share of the attention in this society and the media, does not negate the sincerely offered wish for a Happy Holiday Season.

Indeed, it is a respectful greeting offered to members of our ever increasingly multi-cultural society.

I've got no problem with someone saying what ever they want to me in way of a greeting, and "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" are just two more ways of saying the same thing.

It is not the words per se., but the meaning in which they are offered.

That being said, I wish all DU'ers a sincere wish for their happiness in celebrating their particular holiday event, and a warm, loving wish for a BETTER upcoming year.

:loveya: :grouphug: :toast: :party:

As much as it pains me to say that.

Here's my summary of the conversation...

Colmes: What's wrong with Happy Holidays?

Religious right idiot: This is a Christian natio?

Colmes: There's no basis for that, the founding fathers did not intend for this nation to be a Christian nation, Adams clearly states it in the Treaty of Tripoli.

Religious right idiot proceeds to change the subject because he doesn't know any history.

Therefore Colmes had a bit more control over the situation than he usually did without Hannity yelling him every time he's about to actually make a point.

The asshole he was debating totally got away with changing the subject but if you watched closely it was blatantly obvious that after Colmes brought up the Treaty of Tripoli the asshole had nothing left to defend his "Christian Nation" bullshit.

All hope is lost! What move could we possibly make that could match the wits of a person that it took 4 years of "The War on Christmas" to realize that "Holidays" really means "Holy Days"?! Once again the razor sharp Conservative mind has mastered us!

What fucking idiots they are. They are so anxious to claim persecution that they are incapable of logical thought. Never mind that we are a religiously diverse country, that there are probably at least half a dozen religions with a "holiday/holy day" that takes place between Thanksgiving and New Years, or that it isn't a good idea for businesses to alienate groups of people. All these morans care about is that they aren't being catered to above all others, which in their vacant heads means that they are being persecuted.

I was driving to my sister's house this morning and noticed that two nearby homes had identical lawn signs that said, "Put the CHRIST back in Christmas!". I thought about the article posted here in the last couple of days about how much jack these evangelical outfits were making by selling this stuff to boobs - it's a pure moneymaker, nothing more, yet even in a fairly liberal neighborhood these things are sprouting up.

Wouldn't it be more Christian to take the money spent for those signs and give it to the poor? Wouldn't that be more in tune with the real spirit of Christmas than these angry lawn signs bristling with false persecution meant to highlight a completely bogus issue?

44. This whole woc is the silliest thing yet.
I cannot believe people are getting bent out of shape because someone doesn't offer the "correct" whish for happiness.

What a bunch of mindless drones to buy into this "controversy."

If I found myself addressing one of these "genuine" Christians, I think I'd end the conversation by saying, "may you reap what you sow."

They act like a bunch of spoiled brats who scream and yell until they get to watch the tv channel they want to watch. Silly, silly people.

50. Must be nice
to have such an uncomplicated and trama free life that someone's greeting of "Happy Holidays" is the biggest outrage in your life and you can spend so much time etc venting on it.

Sadly I have way to many other worries and concerns to have time for that kind of shit.:-(

54. The "Holiday Tree" describing a photo of our company Xmas..
tree in a newsletter got my shorts in a knot.
I know it's not a big deal, but since the subject was brought up I'll vent. I couldn't believe that it has now come to the point whereby we can't even refer to a Christmas tree as that any more. A Holiday tree for ##@#@ sake.
What is offensive about saying the word Christmas in describing anything. This has taken things way too far and I let the editor know how I felt in a nice way. He agrees with me, but stated that the word Christmas can't be used now. Too politically incorrect.

56. Merry Solstice! Jesus was probably born in the spring,
although some argue it was the early fall. Whichever it may have been , shepherds would not have been in the fields watching over their flocks by night in December.

Therefore, this is the Solstice Season not the Christmas Season.

71. Excuse my language, but
I just don't give a fuck wether someone wants to say happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Haunnukah, Kwanza. I just don't care. I'm going to die someday and I'd rather not waste one second of my life getting upset about something so trivial.
I really think good "Christians" like this idiot should occupy themselves with toy and food drives during this season rather than being the "Merry Christmas" police. When I read about this stuff I always get the mental image of Jesus smacking himself in the forehead while saying "they still don't get it!!"

So I punched him. Hard. I'm pretty sure I broke his nose.

As he rolled around on the floor writhing in agony, I screamed at him: "Christ died on the cross to save our souls, you motherfucker! So the least you could do is to fucking say 'Merry Christmas', asshole!"

Seasons Greetings, DU!

80. One of the online comics I read summed up my feelings on the subject
last year...
http://www.pvponline.com/article/2570/Fri-Dec-16

I don't care what you say... but if you get offended by someone else's holiday greetings, you've got your own problems. There is nothing wrong with trying to be inclusive, but wishing a specific holiday greeteings isn't being exclusive either. What bugs me is when people try so hard to be inclusive... but they only bother to include the major ones that everyone knows. Last year a local TV station had an ad where some children's chorus sang 'We wish you a merry Christmas'... but changed the words so it was christmas in the first verse, hannukah in the second and kwanzaa in the third.
Okay... but ya left out yule, solstice, agnostica, festivus, ect. Now by trying so hard to include 'everyone', you've made it even MORE obvious that you've left out the few remaining people.

85. They're doing wonders for the secularization of Christmas
Think about it. They don't stop to consider the religion of the greeter. It's all about them and being catered to as Christians.

Problem with that (for them, not the rest of us) is the more non-Christians who feel compelled to wish complete strangers a "Merry Christmas" in order to avoid fundie indignation, the more the meaning of the words is diluted and the more secular Christmas becomes.

IOW their penchant for playing the victim is ultimately counter-productive. I hope they keep it up.

86. It was TRAINED in me to say Happy Holidays when I was a wee gal working retail...
Got my first job at 15 and started out by saying "Merry Christmas," but after a few corrections by customers in the course of my first few days on the job, I quickly learned "happy Holidays." It's stuck with me ever since. Plus, I have friends practicing a multitude of religions, so I never inadvertently wish them the wrong sentiment that way. :)

What's wrong with saying "Happy Holidays"? No one is stopping them from saying "Merry Christmas". People have been saying happy holidays since the beginning of time. I say both.

People that are upset by this are silly idiots.
