"I want my daddy home from Iraq for Christmas"
There is a guy around this area who plays Santa every year, mostly for disadvantaged youth, but will work an occasional party. I ran into the guy recently and he was talking about some of the stuff the youngsters ask for. Of course he gets the usual requests for toys, video games, etc. And he also has dipped into his own pocket and bought toys for kids who may not otherwise have them. But there was one little girl whom he said asked him the impossible. She asked him for her daddy to be home from Iraq. Santa guy told me that he flat out didn't know how to react as he didn't want to lie to the girl, but also didn't want to disappoint her either, especially if her daddy gets wounded or killed. So he told her to pray for daddy's safety, be a good girl, and maybe he would be home soon. The girl's mother thanked him profusely. The point of this is that her daddy should damn well be home. He, and all other soldiers have no business being over thwere in an illegal war. So I echo the little girl and say, "bring daddy home."

1. I hope her father makes it home,
and I hope he's still the same dad she remembers.

Stories like this make me wish I believed in heaven and hell just so I could be sure Bush and Cheney were going to hell.

3. Out of the mouths of babies...
One year, my daughter sent Santa a very small list, but it included "new crouches for my Nana." Her Nana had a broken hip which needed to be replaced, but my daughter just thought new crouches would "cure" her problem, and that Santa could deliver.

This child, and many others here and in Iraq and Afghanistan, are in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

Get.Them.Out.Now.

5. Yikes I would be afraid to tell her that....
you know how kids always feel everything is their fault, like they almost always feel their parents' divorce and stuff like that is their fault, I would be afraid to say "be a good girl and pray and he will be home" because you know what she's gonna think if he doesn't :o( so sad.

8. To be honest with you
I have no clue what I'd say or do in that situation. This guy has been doing the Santa thing for many years, he is a semi retired businessman, owns a body shop/auto repair shop which is successful and has given much of his own money to underprivileged kids. So he likes kids. I imagine he was stumped and had to think of something quick.

6. I wonder how many "Santa"s are dealing with the same request...
"Please bring Daddy/Mommy/Brother/Sister/family member/friend home from Iraq for Christmas."

What do you say. A lot of guys who play 'Santa' do it because they care about the kids, and even the Rent-a-Santa guys who are just doing it for the extra bucks...it must be heartbreaking to hear so many of these requests.

K & R, btw...

7. That Flaming Lips song about Christmas is coming back to haunt me
"Say it isn't so..."

I feel so badly for that little girl. I hope her dad comes home soon.
