The revolving door - another ex-election official goes to work for Diebold
Another election official goes to work for Diebold after leaving
office. A former Diebold lobbyist becomes the election official.
This revolving door is common.

The foremost US voting system guru and computer scientist, Doug Jones,
explains why US election officials promote flawed, expensive voting
systems:
http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/voting/aaas2005.shtml

Also, an unusually good article in TN press on vote-switching - a
commonly reported occurance with DRE voting machines which can be
easily programmed to switch votes in a way that most voters will not
notice. When a voter does notice and cancel the ballot to vote again,
the second time the voter tries to vote, the machine does the right
thing. The voter thinks it could have been his/her own fault.
Everyone is fooled, thinks it is innocent error, and manual audits are
subverted by electronic malfeasance. For more information on how DREs
can be programmed to fool manual audits of voter verifiable paper
trails see:
http://brennancenter.org/dynamic/subpages/download_file_39288.pdf

It is a "no brainer" not to use expensive DRE voting systems, so what
motivates US election officials to actively promote them over the
objection of virtually all independent computer scientists and the
National Institute of Standards and Technology?
