America's Second Harvest: We still need to fill 464,070 bags. Matching Grant!
I just got an email from America's Second Harvest. If you haven't donated yet to the DU drive maybe it will inspire you...

We still need to fill 464,070 bags -
Matching grant DOUBLES you gift

Dear IndyOp,

I wrote to you last week about our plans to fill 1.2 million bags of groceries for the holidays. Today, we have a great opportunity to reach our goal even faster.

Right now, our Board of Directors is offering a generous $182,000 matching grant to DOUBLE the value of your gift. That means every $1 you give will help provide not 4, but 8 bags of groceries!

The timing couldn’t be better because we still need to fill 464,070 bags for hungry families this holiday. I need your support to make that happen.

Remember, our goal is to raise enough money to fill 1.2 million bags of groceries. We still have 464,070 left to fill. Please, give a gift today, and give hope to those in need this holiday.

Thank you for your partnership.

Sincerely,

Vicki Escarra
President and CEO

1. Kick, Nom, Donate(d)! There are so many less fortunate than
most of us are.

2. With this - $10 = 80 bags of groceries; $50 = 400 bags of groceries;
$100 = 800 bags of groceries. This really is a case where giving a little goes a long way... and those that can - giving a lot can go a very, very long way.

Blessings to all this holiday season!

3. Do you know the time frame?
Is it anytime before the end of the year? I gave to the DU drive when it started and I may be able to give again, but have to wait until payday on the 28th.

4. This is from Skinner's first post on this charity drive:
Thank you for contributing in the first-ever Democratic Underground Year-End Charity Donation Drive. We'll be posting periodic updates about the donation drive until it is over, probably on the last day of the year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in this thread. We hope this donation drive is a big success!

8. I am not sure about the time frame on the matching grant from the
Second Harvest Board of Directors - probably until the matching grant runs out.

5. I'm wondering
how is the total on the banner at the top updated? It's been the same for at least a couple of days, so I'm assuming it's not real time.....?

7. The banner is not "real time" - Skinner said he would get a daily email
from Second Harvest and would update the banner each day. I am guessing that Second Harvest took off the weekend (yesterday and today) and will probably take off tomorrow too - so we may see an update on Tuesday? It would be nice if it updated daily because I think people get more excited about contributing, but it seems reasonable that employees at Second Harvest aren't at work for a few days.

6. I usually prefer to give to the local food bank
but I did donate to the DU drive.

10. I respect your local contributions --
It is nice to see exactly where the contributions will be used, too.

12. I, too, brought actual goods for the local food bank and.....
then donated to 2nd Harvest.

I also donated to 2nd Harvest after Katrina when they were one of the sponsors for a concert/relief aid that was on TV. That was my first experience with them and I was impressed with their organization. Consequently, I have donated again.

13. I ran PSA's for ASH on my radio show around the time of Katrina.
Hope it generated some donations.

Food Bank and similar charities are among the few that I give to, because I know they are the most productive at what they do.

11. This is lovely!
It's great to know DU picked an organization where even the Board of Directors is generous.

:kick: to get it higher up the food chain (so to speak) on the Greatest Page.
