Irony alert - the Governator breaks his leg skiing
SAN FRANCISCO — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger broke his leg while skiing with his family Saturday morning in Sun Valley, Idaho, a spokesman said.

Schwarzenegger, 59, was taken to a hospital for X-rays and was discharged with a fracture to his right femur, said Adam Mendelsohn, the governor's Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications.

He will have surgery to repair the bone when he returns to Los Angeles, Mendelsohn said. The governor remained at his Sun Valley home Saturday night and still planned to spend Christmas there.

No one else was involved in the accident, Mendelsohn said.

The fracture was the third medical problem the governor suffered in a year.

He spent several hours at a University of California, Davis, hospital last December with a rapid heartbeat after coming down with a stomach flu. In January, Schwarzenegger needed 15 stitches to repair his cut lip after colliding with a car while riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Los Angeles.

4. I still don't get it.
I'm not a fan of the governator, but I take no joy in his injury, and I find no irony in it.

7. When Democrats ski at Sun Valley
they are elitists who cannot relate to the common man.

When Republicans ski they're rugged outdoorsmen. (until they break their leg)

Oh, there's irony in it all right - but the public probably won't 'get it' until the media tells them it's okay.

9. Who says they are rugged outdoorsmen?
I consider Arnold and Maria self-involved elitists who cannot relate to the common man. If they did Arnold would not have vetoed the universal health care bill that was passed by the California legislature. Instead he wants to put up his own bill that will no doubt be written by the health care and insurance industries who are his major contributors. Now he does relate to those poor corporations who stood to lose big fat bucks that instead would have been directed to health care, not healthy bottom lines for wall street.

Yay, Arnold, rugged outdoorsman, and champion of the common people. :sarcasm:

10. They do
I've never seen any sniping at Arnold for skiing, and he's been skiing at Sun Valley for as long as certain Democrats have. Nobody call Republicans 'out of touch' for skiing, but the RNC sure uses every one of these opportunities to emasculate Democrats.

14. I sure as hell don't.
Any freepers or similar knuckledraggers who delighted or even snickered at some tragedy suffered by a perceived enemy would be thoroughly chastised by us here at DU for being callous and insensitive assholes. And rightly so.

I can't see that engaging in that kind of behavior when Ahnold breaks a pin is any less contemptible.

8. To me, that it happened in Idaho is ironic.
But irony is lost on some.

12. Before we declare a state of irony
we must gather more information.

"The name and level of difficulty of the trail the governor was skiing when his accident occurred were not released."

If the guy was shredding up a double black or ripping through an intense glade he has my respect. Only a minority of so called "skiers" can handle the real trails.

My two closest calls, one on Royal Elk Glade, Beaver Creek Colorado. The Other, White Nitro, Sugarloaf Maine. Narrowly avoided certain doom on both. Though if he was bunny sloping it, heh well than yea we can all laugh it up a bit.

15. I don't wish this kind of injury on anyone.
My boyfriend had to have surgery to mend his broken ankle 2 months ago. He has been in terrible pain ever since, even with good pain meds.

If the Gov's fracture requires surgery he is in for a long, painful few months.

Sorry, but I take no delight in what he and his family will go through.

21. Hey CatWoman
Thing is nobody wants anybody hurt. And I am sure posters who take no delight in this latest break for the governator, are made sick over the carnage in Iraq caused by our invasion. 'Cause really, breaking a leg is nothing like breaking up whole cities.

Still, as much as I like to be able to ski the big slopes, I can take no delight in that since not only can I not afford the whole ski-trip ticket, I sure as heck couldn't afford to break my leg in the process. So, forget it.

Actually, the governator is quite lucky to have a chance to break his leg skiing. And some of us are lucky to have a roof, eh?

Mele Kalikimaka!

19. I'm just so very happy that his wonderful health care insurance will
be sure to take care of his every needs. He deserves it!! The poor guy - is it too much to ask to be able to come home healthy from your ski trip? My thoughts and prayers are with him - and his family in this very trying time.
God Bless.
