Happy Winter Solstice Eve Everybody.. S!
Tonight the three stars of Orion's belt (the three wise men) will align vertically with the star Sirus (star of Bethlehem) low on the horizon pointing to where the new sun will rise in the morning after spending the last three days at its lowest point during the year, not dropping any lower or climbing any higher during these three days (aka dead for three days). Tomorrow morning, on December 25th, the sun of the heavens will be "resurrected" or "born again" and begin its one degree climb (its ascension) each day until summer solstice.

2. Same to you - and the rest of DU!
Actually, the winter solstice was about 22 minutes after midnight on the 22nd this year. It usually falls a few days before the christian holiday of christmas.

6. I love the constellation of Orion.
Ten years ago, I'd sit in my hot tub on a frigid winter night and gaze at the sky and think about how many thousands and thousands of years of humanity, billions of human beings, looked at the sky and saw Orion. Here in the northern hemisphere it's a winter constellation. For sky-gazers, it has some of the most fascinating viewing available ... not the least of whicch is the Orion Nebula. We also have Betelgeuse, the Horsehead Nebula, and the Great Nebula. Fascinating.

But from what the OP says (news to me) that only now is the earth beginning to ascend again after three days of a flat spin.

So, there is that.

11. Hi Boone
It goes like this:

On Dec 21st the Sun has reached its lowest one degree drop per day throughout the year. For the next three days the Sun doesn't drop or climb in the sky - aka its dead at its lowest day for three days.

Then on the night of Dec 24th (and only on this night) the three stars of Orion's belt align vertically with the star Sirius pointing at the spot where the Sun will arise on its first day of climbing one degree per day toward Summer Solstice.

The three stars are the three wise men announcing the birth of the new sun of the heavens. Sirius is the star that guided where the birth would take place.

The three days the Sun stays at the lowest point in the sky is the death and resurrection story. This event is a story about as old as written history.

Anyway, happy Winter Solstice, Happy Hanukkah or Marry Christmas. Its all the same.

12. Dude. Happy whatever and Merry that too..
However what you just said is astronomically impossible. Nothing in the universe stops. ever. The solstice is on a different day every year, it is my winter holiday. I am a practicing witch.

The earth revolves around the sun and the sun doesn't just stand still.ever.

But Merry Whatever anyway :hi:

13. So from now on the days get longer?
Just asking from a practical point of view since I have to drive home every night from work at six pm and my night vision isn't that good.
