But if the media is worried about a crash in the 2nd half of 2007, I suspect it'll be around or after after July 4...

5. Just keep the goats out of the garden |
|
or you'll have fat, well-fed goats and no veggies!
We might end up taking in boarders in order to pay the mortgage if push comes to shove.

But seriously, probably just go with zombie survival.
Or, live off some berries and drink from a creek.
Don't really have a plan. Spur of the moment kind of guy. Screw it, zombie survival.

Probably leave the urban area and find some place to grow veggies and chooks. Though I suspect there'll be a lot of folk wandering the roads. It ain't going to be pretty.

9. We got over 3 feet of snow last Wednesday & Thursday, with drifts over 5 feet. |

As of Christmas Eve, the grocery stores still had not had deliveries & were stocking the shelves with stock from the backroom.
Christmas Eve day the produce department was shot -- no mushrooms, no celery, no carrots. The snack isle was just as bad -- no Fritos, no chips, only snacks like weird flavored pretzels. Canned goods? More of them, but not anything popular like tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes, green beans. It made me think how fragile our system really is & what only a few days without deliveries does to our grocery selection.
Now just think if there had been the type of disaster where people knew the trucks weren't coming for weeks, or longer. There would be hoarding galore & the entire store would have been empty. When I walked through the store, I wondered if I was the only one who contemplated something like that.

16. Sounds like the way grocery stores in Florida look every time |
|
we have a tropical storm or hurricane heading in our general direction. We've learned the time to prepare is in the early spring. Because if one waits for hurricane season, one is likely not going to be able to buy water, batteries, lamp oil, or nonperishable foods...

10. Cope and roll with the punches...just like those in the last crash did. |
|
Comming from a poor urban background (from a bad neighboorhood no less) sorta prepares you for this in a way.

11. Move to the retirement house we are building in Panama. |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-26-06 11:19 AM by mnhtnbb
It should be finished in January 07. When our youngest graduates high school in June 08 we will be making plans to retire to Panama, but if the economy or political situation crashes before then, we may make the move sooner if we felt our lives were in danger.
Personally, I don't think you're going to see an economic crash prior to the election of '08. Too much is at stake for the R's.

Venezuela sounds like a nice destination for me. I wonder if they would let me in since I'm very anti-Bush and I'm a socialist.

15. Panama is booming. Expansion of the Canal is going to keep it |
|
going for at least another ten years. Lots of US citizens are heading to Panama. Even though it's a Spanish-speaking country, there is a lot of English spoken--due to the influence of the US over the Canal for so many years. Here are some good links. http://www.panamainfo.com/en/listing/what_to_do/vacationRetirement/http://www.escapeartist.com/panama/panama.htmhttp://www.internationalliving.com/panama/http://www.expatsinpanama.com/index.htm

18. Spend more time in my garden. |
|
Switch over from my electric water pump to the manual one. Finally finish my root cellar. Scrounge material to expand the greenhouse for winter veggies. Tidy up my outdoor kitchen since I haven't really used it in a few years. Maybe finally get caught up on my reading.

If it looks like we're in for a long slow decline I may stay right where I am, in a small urban bungalow in a walkable neighbourhood close to public transit.
If the crash looks like it's going to be sharp and deep, I'll be eying a move to my parents' farm: 50 arable acres with a woodlot and a pond, an energy efficient house and lots of space for off-grid energy generation, ten miles outside a city of 350,000.
