A poverty-stricken petrol pump attendant who is a distant relative of Saddam Hussein and bears a striking resemblance to his infamous clansman has been repeatedly harassed by American forces, increasingly desperate to find Iraq's former dictator.

Mohammed Hussein, 64, who was jailed for three years under Saddam for being a member of the Communist Party, has been detained on several occasions in recent weeks by American soldiers.

"I don't like to look like Mr Hussein," he said wearily. "Just a few days ago American soldiers stopped me again and one of them was staring at me. The soldiers thought I was Saddam Hussein but eventually they let me go."

Perhaps unwisely, Mohammed, who works the pumps in the petrol station in Al Ouja, Saddam's home village near Tikrit, sports a white head-dress and large dark sunglasses - both trademarks of his namesake. Unnervingly, he also shares physical mannerisms with Saddam: when he laughs, his shoulders shake. To prove his modest circumstances, Mohammed took The Telegraph to the dilapidated house where he lives with his wife and three sons. "Here's the proof that I am not Saddam," he said, pointing to the crumbling walls. "As you can see, I do not live in a palace."

1. He had many doubles.
They could hang him several times, couldn't they?

Once for each kangaroo court.

2. Or just hang one double, claim it was saddam, and he and rummy sit on a beach?
Who knows what to believe with this bunch. The only thing you can be sure of is that nothing is what it seems, they are masters of deception.

Not saying I believe they'll hang a double and scurry saddam off somewhere, but I don't disbelive it.

3. Timmy Mcveigh
will be serving drinks with Ken Lay doing the floor show. The establishment is yet to give me a reason to believe otherwise.

5. Ford's funeral may eclipse Saddam's hanging
Unless, of course, * gets them to postpone it.
