1. And any "reelection" based on an illegitimate incumbency
is itself illegitimate. Screw Bush.

2. Actually and Legally
Gerald Ford was Acting President. If a president was not elected by the public he is not legally president but only acting.

3. incorrect
Ford was the president in name and power. he was legally president as per the 25th amendment

Section 1

In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Section 3

Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

Ford became VP under section 2, and then became president under section 1.

the only time there is an 'acting president' is under section 3.

6. there have been several "unelected" presidents!
Eight presidents have died in office and their VP became president through succession, not election. What made Ford unique was that Ford was not elected VP either, he was appointed by Nixon to take the place of Agnew, who resigned in disgrace. So Ford was the first president to not be elected to national office.

11. Andrew Johnson was an unelected president...
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 11:36 AM by roamer65
...and did not run in 1868. So the media is yet again full of bat squeeze if they're saying Ford was the only unelected president. However, Ford may be the only one to be appointed VP, then ascend to the presidency unelected. I'd hafta crack the history books to verify that one.
