Worst Congress Yet The infamous “do nothing” 80th Congress of 1948 was in session for only 108 days, therefore earning their ignominious label. The 109th Congress that just ended in 2006 shattered that absenteeism record, having been in session for several days less than that. To make the comparison worse, the 80th Congress at least passed the Marshall Plan, one of the great achievements in the history of American foreign policy, and the Clean Water Act, a historic environmental act. The major achievements of the 109th Congress seem to be funding the bridge to nowhere in Alaska and creating the Medicare prescription drug boondoggle while ignoring their role in providing a check on executive power. For good measure, they are now insulting working Americans, as the remaining Republicans are now complaining that Democrats expect them to work five days a week the next two years, instead of four. Is it any wonder voters rejected this worst Congress ever?
Never Fear To Negotiate To the person who wrote we should not negotiate with Iran because they don’t want us to succeed: I would ask if the Soviets wanted us to succeed when Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan negotiated with them. How about when Kennedy and Khrushchev negotiated during the Cuban Missile Crisis, possibly saving the world from nuclear war? Negotiating does not mean we have to give away the farm. We constantly negotiate with the Saudis, yet most of the 9/11 hijackers were financed by Saudis and were of Saudi descent. It was only a few years ago that the Iranians offered to negotiate with us about giving up their nuclear program. They were turned down by the White House, which led to Iran electing a hard-line president who has continued advancing their nuclear program. JFK once said, “We should never negotiate out of fear, but we should never fear to negotiate.”
