Two good letters in my local paper - one on negotiating, one on Congress
Worst Congress Yet

The infamous “do nothing” 80th Congress of 1948 was in session for only 108 days, therefore earning their ignominious label. The 109th Congress that just ended in 2006 shattered that absenteeism record, having been in session for several days less than that. To make the comparison worse, the 80th Congress at least passed the Marshall Plan, one of the great achievements in the history of American foreign policy, and the Clean Water Act, a historic environmental act. The major achievements of the 109th Congress seem to be funding the bridge to nowhere in Alaska and creating the Medicare prescription drug boondoggle while ignoring their role in providing a check on executive power. For good measure, they are now insulting working Americans, as the remaining Republicans are now complaining that Democrats expect them to work five days a week the next two years, instead of four. Is it any wonder voters rejected this worst Congress ever?

Never Fear To Negotiate

To the person who wrote we should not negotiate with Iran because they don’t want us to succeed: I would ask if the Soviets wanted us to succeed when Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan negotiated with them. How about when Kennedy and Khrushchev negotiated during the Cuban Missile Crisis, possibly saving the world from nuclear war? Negotiating does not mean we have to give away the farm. We constantly negotiate with the Saudis, yet most of the 9/11 hijackers were financed by Saudis and were of Saudi descent. It was only a few years ago that the Iranians offered to negotiate with us about giving up their nuclear program. They were turned down by the White House, which led to Iran electing a hard-line president who has continued advancing their nuclear program. JFK once said, “We should never negotiate out of fear, but we should never fear to negotiate.”

1. I don't get all this "do-nothing" congress stuff...
They passed all kinds of horrible legislation. Maybe it's a good thing they barely worked.

2. I'd prefer if the outgoing Congress had done much LESS.

No "Military Commissions Act" to repeal habeus corpus.

No "Bankruptcy Bill" to screw over people with huge debts from medical bills.

No "Class Action" bill to make it more difficult to get civil justice.

3. While the legislation they passed was horrible
They did not pass a lot of it.

They did nothing regarding executive oversight...

they did nothing regarding the minimum wages...

nothing regarding health care...

nothing on outsourcing of jobs other than hot air...

next to nothing on implementing the 9/11 Commission recommendations...(not to mention the Hart/Rudman report)

nothing on global warming...

nothing on improving the environment...

nothing on reducing our foreign oil dependency...

5. I hadn't thought of that. You may be right. Just like Junior going
to the pig farm. Less time for him to screw up the world.

4. Both letters are outstandiing.
On a side note, I enjoyed reading other opinions included in the newspaper as well (the reader who complains he can't get enough sleep due to the upstairs neighbors' loud "intimate times" -- hee). Great newspaper -- every community should have a newspaper just for the purpose of speaking out.

6. The Bush* Administration does not fear to negotiate they just feel
they should not lower themselves to the same level as their adversaries. They feel for some unknown reason they are superior to all living beings..and the funny thing is they are the exact opposite. Arrogance to the nth degree.
