Something to consider about Ford's selection.... |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 11:31 AM by Hoosier Dem
I was watching th coverage last night and was reminded of something that I had heard years ago and just filed away in my brain.
For was NOT Nixon's original choice for VP after Agnew stepped down. Nixon actually wanted John Connally! Only when the Congressional leadership made it clear that onnally was totally unacceptable did they compromise with Ford.
Can you imagine what would have happened if Connally had succeeeded Nixon? Considering this guy also got caught up in corruption scandals, we could have had yet another administration mired in scandal.
"President John Connally"?? Man, does that give me the chills. I'd almost (ALMOST) have preferred Agnew have stuck around!

1. At least Ford was smart enough not to pick George H.W. Bush for VP |
|
I haven't read it, but a friend was telling me a couple of weeks ago, that he was reading a book written by Ford, and he said that George was really pushing hard to be named Ford's VP, and he was a major pain in the ass for Ford.

2. I forgot that Ford picked Rockefeller for VP.... |

One more thing to piss off the Republican conservatives, naming the Liberal Republican governor of New York as your number 2.
Rocky alienated the conservatives from Ford, which was a large impetus behind the Reagan challenge to Ford in the 1976 primaries. In fact, Rockefeller "announced his retirement" early on in the 1976 election cycle to allow Ford to campaign without the Rocky baggage.
Yet, oddly enought, that summer Reagan actually announced his VP choice before the GOP convention in an attempt to keep his candidacy alive. His choice, Liberal Republican Senator Richard Schweiker of Pennsylvania.

6. Blimey - hadn't thought of that in years - but I actually remember that now! |
|
I remember thinking that Schweiker was a total traitor to agree to run with the evil Reagan!
Obviously, Reagan made a very big and bad impression on me at a very early stage of my political thinking.
