I just joined the ACLU because of the Sheehan incident.
After seeing a citizen evicted from a government function simply because of her political beliefs, I decided to join the ACLU. I should have done it a long time ago. You can join for as little as $5. Please help them help us. Good Lord how far will this Nation sink? I hope Sheehan files a suit for violation of civil rights. I think she has a case.

23. Thank you. I can't wait to get my card.
I can't wait for the first opportunity to whip it out and exclaim "As a matter of fact, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU!"

I think I am a bit more upset at this than the average DU'er.

How utterly disgraceful. What an utter coward we have as a President.

A MAN would have learned of Sheehan's presence, WELCOMED her, thanked her for her sacrifice, and gone on with the speech. Bush is such an utter coward and miserable failure. An embarrassment to the country.

5. I asked a lawyer in our building...
He said it's always been against the law to stage a loud protest in the House gallery. Our Constitution guarantees our right to speak out--but not our right to speak out anywhere we choose--or at the expense of someone else's (Bush) right to speak out. :eyes:

8. She didn't open her mouth; how can that be construed as
protesting?

19. I guess they figured...
...that her T-shirt was protest enough. Beats me...

9. Loud protest?!?
They sure don't seem to mind that damn continuous and unnecessary applause.

Welcome to DU BTW :hi:

24. Thank you!
I'm glad you're here, too! :pals:

Remember that awful one with Imogene Coca in it? I think two guys from 'outer space' had landed in a Flintstone-like village. They had a tremendous problem scaring up a script plot each week. It was so awful I don't think it made it to the next season--and I sure can't remember the name of it! They had to 'can' the laughter--it SURE wasn't going to walk in on it's own!

10. Sheehan was sitting in her seat and not bothering anybody.
She was taken out of the People's House for wearing a t-shirt with a number on it. There was no loud protest.

Where did you hear that there was a loud protest?

BTW - I'm a lawyer too.

12. Cindy never said a word
there was nothing "loud" about it. She just sat down and unzipped her hoodie. That lawyer hasn't read what actually happened.

22. To clarify...
The lawyer I spoke to only told me what the RULES were--he wasn't analyzing Cindy's conduct to see if it conformed to them or not...

14. Cops "screwed up"
The DC police will ask that the charges be dismissed against Cindy. An unidentified cop was quoted as saying "we screwed up".

Actually, this is too bad. It would have been a great forum for a 1st amendment discussion....

17. The civil rights violation has occurred.
She was evicted from the function for no valid reason. It doesn't matter that they will not continue and press charges. There is really nothing to charge her with! She did nothing illegal.

I just heard on the news that Sheehan will file a civil rights suit for being evicted from the function.

She has a solid case.

20. Yayahh!
I feel better but I am still outraged.

I meant to join a long time ago too but got busy and forgot.

This incident showed in actions, not just words, that political suppression is happening in this Nation.

I am angry, frightened, and ready to fight these bastards. I guess it was the last straw for me.

I have not been involved enough and resolve to do more.
