Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 07:49 PM by KoKo01
How can this be?

If I post something and only a few people reply why shouldn't my post go to archives and I consider what my post said not worth DU'ers responding to.

Giving DU'ers a false sense that their posts get "fly by clicks" on the subject line while no person reads or comments is kind of misleading.

How many of you like the "View Feature"...it makes us feel good on the one hand because if no one replies we see that 200 or more have "clicked on" our post...but isn't it kind of fake if NO ONE TOOK TIME TO REPLY?

How do you all feel about the "Views?"

1. I rarely get a lot of responses to my posts, at
least with the post views count I know someone took the time to click on my post. They may not have read what I had to say but I can hope can't I?

15. ahhhh...wicked thing....but I understand...because that's what worries me,
too! Not that I'm not vain enough to think that having over 200 posts with one reply makes me feel good that some folks "MIGHT" have read me. BUT...what if I only got 200 "click through's" that thought my post was crap while someone else posted and had 18 replies and not 200 "Views?"

It's a problem...for those of us trying to post stuff that we hope folks will read and think important. What if what we post is "GARBAGE" but we get "click throughs" that makes us feel we posted something good that was read???

I guess you would say...I lurk on posters like you...and give a click but don't reply...because I agree and have nothing else to say.

19. You nailed it, Karl....I think that was what I was trying to say...in my post
if you read it through. If no one replies then it SHOULD BE A DEAD POST...but the "Views" seem to make the post more important than it was.

Something is wrong with the system when only one or a "handful" of replies are there...but there are so many "Views."

9. I like the "views"
I don't get offended if all the "viewers" don't reply - there are a lot of lurkers here (I was a lurker for many months before I began posting). As long as people are reading and what we're posting is sinking in (hopefully), that's a good thing. Each day, another lurker comes out of hiding because of something they read on this board. :-)

10. Sometimes I read something but have nothing to say-
We all have those moments- after reading an article online, an op ed, or something by a friend in an email...

Or sometimes I read something...and then come back to it later when I have something to say. (added views, IIRC)

and other times I say "word" and give a

I suspect that others have their own reasons for viewing posts but not responding...

20. Good Point! Sometimes I click on DU and read in a rush...and don't have
time to reply and think it was a great post...but can't add anything to it...

It all depends on the time I have to think of a response. Thanks.. that might be it with many folks... We don't have much time these days..and some of what's posted we SO AGREE WITH...we might not have much to add..so we read and click.

Sometimes other people on the thread have already said what I could have said, and sometimes I start to reply and then change my mind because I don't really have anything to add. I think the views feature is fine. It's nice to know people are looking anyway, even if they're not saying much.

14. most people prefer not to post
on any site the vast majority are lurkers for a variety of reasons -- 1) they type too slowly, 2) they are shy and don't want to be crapped on for having bad grammar or bad spelling or called a nazi, which always happens in any thread of any length on the internet, 3) they don't want their thoughts put out in public and left in some internet archive for all of time and human history in case they change their mind or their boss reads it and can somehow trace it to them

probably the lurkers are the smart ones when it comes right down to it

17. Like the views
It's like sitting in a room with lots of people. Generally, only a few people comment on what is being said. There is no need for everyone to comment on everything. Sometimes initial posts are declarative and not really asking for replies.

The "views" also tell us what subjects really interest people. It's kind of funny - sometimes we prove it's true that there IS interest in tabloid, gossip stuff.

18. It's nice to think that someone read my thoughts,
even if they didn't respond. My thoughts tend to wander down different trails than the "hot" topics, so don't get too many responses. For example, I started a post about an issue of import to me about 20 minutes ago, and I don't think it's gotten a single response. It wasn't about '08, it wasn't about Ford.

I think I'll go look and see if anyone read it. Then I can hope that someone cares enough to act on the issue, even if they don't respond here.

Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 08:09 PM by KoKo01
...they move on...so the poster is left wondering if the person read past the subject line, had nothing more to ad and moved on. But, at least it would be good to know if the "body of your post" was worth the time taken to read it.... How does one know from "Views" whether your stuff is crap that didn't make it past "Subject Line View" or was read but folks didn't have anything to add to it but read it.

Was it Not Controversial Enough...too Bland...or just of No Interest Past "Subject Line?"

Also, if you want your post to stay up because you feel it's important, feel free to kick it up yourself. We all do it. Some posts are so good that there is no reason to add anything to it or debate it. I try to kick up those posts when I see them because I know they will sink fast. Not all the lurkers think of doing that.

40. Yeah....If I have something to say, like you, I just say it and if it "DIES" then
so be it. When I take a lot of time finding links and say something...it's kind of discouraging to see only a few replies...but then before the "Views Count" I would work harder to refine a post thinking that only a few replies meant that I didn't make myself clear or folks weren't interested because I didn't bring enough information.

With "Views Count" it seems that it doesn't matter what you say...it's kind of how it "hits folks" at the moment..? Lots of Research, Links or whatever isn't important...it's if it goes to DU'ers Gut that folks will discuss?

and sometimes I don't get to catch up on the board til late at night or early the next morning. If I respond I am pretty sure that noone else will read it so why bother?

That said, once in a while I start a new thread to an earlier one that I think is really important that somehow got lost in the shuffle.

I think the view feature is awesome and at least let's me know that someone has read my post(s).

Been reading here since 2002, signed up for a screen name in 2004, and only now have 600-some-odd posts. I'm on here everyday and would go nuts without this place, but most of the time whatever I would have contributed has already been said. I guess it just means there are lots of people here who think like I do. :) Most of those "views" are probably from people like me. If someone's only reading the subject line, well, they can do that without clicking, can't they? Take heart.

61. lots of reasons for not posting
There are many reasons a person may not comment. Just a few:

a) cat on one's lap
b) having lunch, reading DU
c) don't feel like "talking"
d) nuthin' to say
e) low bandwidth posters have to wait while threads load up, etc.--thus it's too time consuming to post and just easier to read.

A lot of my posts get few replies because they are articles that I think everyone should see. An example is one I just spent quite a bit of time on--trends in 2007. I summarized much of what the article said because it was from a publication not many here are probably registered for. See this thread at:
