Or more accurately: "The Decider" mode.
The Commander-in-Chief is Bush's only persona right now. The strong, resolute warrior who will not backdown in the face of attacks, introspection, questioning or compromise. Mercka will win the war because HE will not give up until the war is won. Nevermind that it cannot be won militarily.
See, the Commander-in-Chief has one answer to any and all dissent, whether it is right or wrong. That answer? "I am the Commander-in Chief." Because as the Commander-in-Chief he does not have to answer to anyone. He does not have to adapt if he does not want to. Bush plays the role of Commander-in-Chief the way a bratty kid might act on his birthday. I am special, therefore I am unaccountable and infallible. Why? Because today is my birthday/I am The Decider!
The Commander-in-Chief can take the Iraq Study Group suggestions, hold his nose, dismiss it and treat it like the authors are somehow less knowledgable than he is, because, you guessed it, he is the Commander-in-Chief! Any rational analysis, intelligent dissent, or even cold hard reality does not matter, because the bottom line is, what matters is what matters to the Commander-in-Chief.
And, this Commander-in-Chief thinks he knows it all already. He knows the "real" lesson of Vietnam. He knows we have to win something called "the war on terra." He knows these things. He's the Commander-in-Chief!
About the only thing he doesn't know, is that he actually doesn't know a damn thing.
His whole fake image is built on somehow being tough. His whole background suggests that this guy is more than happy to let others do all the fighting for him. Whether he was skipping out on Vietnam, losing other people's money in business or getting people maimed and killed in a hopeless war of his own creation, George W. Bush has never had to be accountable for anything. He has never had to change, never had to adapt and never had to actually do anything for himself. He knows all the answers, yet can never come up with an actual solution.
Don't expect him to change anytime soon. These next two years will be long and frustrating. More people will die because of it too.
