On Ford, seems like he was one boring man.... |
|
I was not here when Ford took over, so I missed the excitement back then.
I watched all the cables and all the Internets since yesterday AM. I learned that he was a president by accident, he served a very short time, he tried to do some things on inflation but failed, he let Nixon get away with crimes without a real explanation, he ran for Pres. and lost, he tried to be a VP on someone else's ticket later, and was a very good man.
All of the above tells me he was very very boring, even the talking heads are struggling to come up with words, other than the generic boring stuff.
Nutshell: boring!!! May his soul rest in peace.

The Ford presidency wasn't just accidental, it was accident prone. Gerry Ford's mishaps kept the comedians very busy, especially Chevy Chase. Ford's ineffectual WIN campaign was also good for a chuckle. You had to be there.

5. It wasn't boring when he played golf. |
|
It was hardhat time for the spectators.
Or watching him get off a plane (how many steps will he make it down before he falls?).
Hell, I remember watching him get out of a chopper during the '76 celebrations and hitting his head on the hatch.
Don't forget that it was LBJ that said of Ford; "He played football one to many times without a helmet."

6. I remember feeling great relief that Ford was in and Nixon was finally gone. |
|
Those were bad times. Ford was a really welcome change.
I do think that these times are just as bad. And it will be a huge relief when Bush and his minions and their whole awful mindset are gone.

And he survived an attempt on his life. How boring is all that? Yesterday Univision showed him REALLY slipping on his butt ALL THE WAY DOWN the steps from about 1/4 of the way up. I had forgotten how far he had gone. Plus he would knock golf balls hitting spectators. Plus Betty's drinking... And his not knowing that Poland was in the Soviet sphere (so how can people here get upset with Silvestre REYES?). In a way all of those things really *do* add up to "boring".
And then this morning, the radio news was that a letter of his was released saying he disagreed/disapproved of Shrub's aggression. Haven't seen/heard a PEEP on this out of CNN so far.

11. Yes, he was doubtless pretty boring. But that can be an advantage in a leader! |
|
There is an ancient Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times." A similar one could be, "May you have an exciting president".
Not saying that Ford was great, but some of his successors have been just that bit toooooo interesting.
