Gerald Ford - War Hero!
Thought I'd toss this in to feed anyone checking out what's going on at DU today:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/28/opinion/28drury.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin

Conservatives didn't care too much for Ford, but unlike bush, Ford did honorably serve his country in the military and did a rather heroic deed while serving. That can't be taken away from him. And the fact that he and not bush was, at least on one day, a military hero, should make conservatives groan at the mention of his name even louder.

2. What a great story, President Ford was of great service to his country
He may have been a Republican and an unelected one at that, but that story shows just what a person he was.

4. I don't care what anyone says, Ford was a good guy.
And I have always admired Betty Ford. I don't care if he was a Republican; sometimes we have to look past political labels and see the person. Woodward's interview with Ford solidifies my feelings for him.

8. I agree. I don't think we need to always be so partisan and attack
any and all republicans. We don't need to act like Freepublic.

7. He was a brave man
that's for sure. I also think, especially in contrast to Nixon, he was a decent man. I didn't agree with everything he did (mainly the pardon), but you can't take away his courage.

While attending Yale Law School, where Ford had been working since September 1935 as an assistant football and boxing coach, he joined a group of students led by R. Douglas Stuart, Jr., and signed a petition to enforce the 1939 Neutrality Act. The petition was circulated nationally and was the inspiration for the America First Committee, a group determined to keep America out of World War II.

10. Ford wasn't that bad for a Republican
He wasn't a hater and a wingnut.

Not too many Republicans like Ford anymore.

12. If I were on the same ship with LT Ford
I'd consider him a hero after what he did during the typhoon. And there is no maybe about him being a Vet.
