Sad Story - Homeless in America |
|
One day in the week following Katrina, I took a bag of bottled waters on my bike with me when I was out taking photos of the damage. I handed them out to people who needed them.
One old homeless man was sitting outside the Shell Station on Pass Road and I gave him some of the waters I had and moved on down the road. He always stayed in my mind because he looked like a skinny Santa Claus. After that, I would see him here or there with the other homeless in the area.
Today I found out he froze to death outside the Biloxi Walmart on the night after Christmas. The temps had dropped to the 20's that night. They found him on the property the next day.
This makes me feel so sick inside. I wish I could have done more or someone would have seen him to give him a blanket or something. Sorry. I just had to vent.

4. It is this sickest thing about this country |
|
I know how you feel, we have more and more homeless where I live every week. I wish I could do much more as well. It makes me so sick while our little king flys around the world, wasting ungodly amounts of money, pretending to be a ruler.

5. I know exactly how you feel, been there myself. |
|
My reaction is still outrage, and it kills me to see how many are out here and I don't have the resources to help in any significant way.

11. I think his name is Stanley |
|
If it's the same one, he's fairly well known around here. A young guy at work told me he and his friends always called him Streetside Santa.
My boss filled me in on the man's possible name. If it is the same one, he was a Vietnam vet who was mentally messed up, but harmless. He lived for some time under the Popp's Ferry bridge which was near the subdivision where his ex-wife and kids live. He stayed there to be close to them.
Supposedly the local police tried to keep an eye on him and gave him food and stuff. If he needed something they would call his mom up and she would bring him clothes or whatever. They say he had a stash of canned goods stacked under the bridge like his pantry. He would pick up trash all around the bridge area and then hand the bags to the trash guys when they went by.
I'm just not 100% sure it's the same guy or not. Stanley has lived on the street for years, I guess. If I find anything else out, I'll post.
