You're not poor, so send cash to the charity drive, dammit!
Since it seems that people who are relatively poor are the ones donating and demanding that other poor people do the same, I thought it was time to request that those of you who are not poor at all fork out the dough. Go ahead, you'll feel better and perhaps make it so that someone here who's not rich doesn't have to fork out the baby food money just to meet the charity drive challenges.

You poor people out there, don't send in anything. Just don't be pressured into it. There are plenty of relatively rich people reading this discussion board who can do a lot more and hurt a lot less for it.

Send in the cash you rich people! You know who you are.

1. I'd donate but I'm really poor. I don't even have a car.

2. I'm not asking you to donate, I'm asking you NOT to donate
Unlike the other threads, I don't think poor people should be encouraged to be generous with their precious money. Seriously. I can't donate either and I'm sick of seeing people posting threads urging the poor to give more because one poor person did too. Fuck that. Let the rich people fork out the cash. It's that simple.

I'm sorry to hear you're not doing so well either. I'm in the same boat. Good luck to you, best wishes for the new year and don't hand out ANY cash you can't afford!

22. Is that poor?
I own two bikes - nice Trek bikes too. Who needs two bikes?

I donated a mere .15% of my income. A small donation, but if 5,000 people gave half what I did it would total $37,500.

3. I wouldn't presume that people on this board don't give to other
charitable organizations of their own choosing.

6. How many people on DU are rich?
What consitutes "rich," anyway? Is there a specific amount you must reach or go over to be considered rich? Just wondering.

I don't consider myself very well-off, but I gave $50. Is that okay? :D

9. I'd say three figures a year is well off. Especially these days.
So much of the money goes right to the top.

13. I know how you feel
I have a nice wall hanging that says I'm an engineer, but since I don't live in India or Pakistan, fuggeddaboutit. It looks nice, though it cost me a heckuva lot of sweat and tears to be just hanging there as a reminder of the past.

11. I'd like to know why people have to advertise they gave?
Shouldn't charity be from the heart and not advertised? Anonymous charity is true charity IMHO.

12. You said it clearer than I could
I'm not broke this year from spending on myself, but I don't feel the need to tell anyone about my charity work and what a difference I made in the lives of poor people this year. Suffice to say I feel truly joyous that I was able to make a difference and my temporary poverty doesn't impinge upon that at all.

Knowing the people you are helping is a bonus and reaps rewards for both far beyond the "season" of goodwill, which is why I prefer to work directly with the people I'm helping. However, when one gives anonymously and one does not grandstand or try to pressure or cajole others into doing the same, that is truly a gift.

Others would do well to take your post to heart.

15. Yup. And posting anonymously on an internet board totally
reveals oneself.

You have NO IDEA why people chose to do what they did. Grow up and get the fuck over yourself.

16. Why would YOU be upset?
Are you a rich person and not a giver? Why accuse me of being a child? As for knowing WHY people choose to do things, I never addressed that. I only addressed WHAT they do. Perhaps your reading skills are not quite as sharp and since you're so belligerent, are you drunk?

Just wondering.

20. Why would YOU attack Midlodemocrat?
Here's a clue for you, read Skinner's post at the top of this page, especially this part:

"UPDATE! CHARITY DONATION DRIVE CHALLENGE! INCREASE YOUR DONATION BY 10%!

DU member Midlodemocrat has made an extremely generous challenge to the members of DU in support of the DU Year-end Charity Donation Drive. She has pledged to donate $100 to America's Second Harvest for every $1,000 donated by the members of Democratic Underground, up to a maximum challenge donation of $1,500!"

Just in case it's your reading skills that are not quite as sharp as you think.

Midlodemocrat is matching donations, up to $1,500.

Now who looks belligerent and/or drunk?

Just wondering........

24. I didn't attack Midlodemocrat, I asked rich people to send in money
Apparently, Midlodemocrat is one of the people who are rich. Good for them. More power to ya. So she/he IS a rich person AND put up some cash. Cool. No problem with that, right?

I guess the grandstanding comment hit a bit too close to home there because I can't see what else it could have been. My OP wasn't about Midlodemocrat, it was about people who grandstand about their charity giving and demand that poor and poorer people fork out more dough. Come to think of it, that's just what Midlodemocrat did, but I didn't call him/her out in person. I had no idea, she/he was one of these people who promise easy bucks IF poorer people give up hard-earned bucks. It all makes sense now. Thanks. Now I know my point was made, not lost on him/her.

I imagine walking through downtown and telling a bum that he can have five bucks from me if, and only if, the guy next to me gives him five too, but if he only hands over $2, all I'm going to give is $2, and if nothing, you're SOL. Is that charity?

Personally, if I had $1500 bucks to donate, I would just do it instead of demanding other people do it first. Maybe that's why I'm not rich.

Hmmmmmmm

23. This Is Helpful How? I'm Amazed At The Things Some Will Choose To Be Bitter Over.
And I'm incredibly grateful to EVERYONE who donated, or who scraped up even a couple bucks to help contribute. Of course no one is under any obligation, but it is always good to remember that overall, no matter how bad off some of us are, there are always those far worse, who could use just a buck or two. There is nothing more honorable than that spirit of giving, however possible.

But to be bitter over it? That's a bit way over the top in my opinion.

I'm on FIRE! Just making a point and hopefully saving someone from being guilted into giving away cash they really should keep for themselves, nothing bitter going on here. I consider it a public service.

25. the quickest way to get me to NOT donate
is to use "guilt". it also pisses me off - big time

I was raised by an Italian-Catholic mother - she's the only one that knows how to push my "guilt" buttons

While I recognize your intentions are based on your desire to help in raising donations - guilting people into it isn't the best tact.

BTW - I have donated, but it had very little to do with your guilt post

26. Hahaha we agree on something
My OP was ABOUT guilt-postings and richer people pressuring poorer people to pay handouts. It asked poor people NOT to donate. And, I concede, it was a tongue in cheek guilting of rich people to make my point, I grant you, but that was only my sense of humor coming out and my desire to catch their attention.
