A giant ice shelf the size of 11,000 football fields has snapped free from Canada's Arctic, scientists said. The mass of ice broke clear 16 months ago from the coast of Ellesmere Island, about 497 miles south of the North Pole, but no one was present to see it in Canada's remote north. Scientists using satellite images later noticed that it became a newly formed ice island in just an hour and left a trail of icy boulders floating in its wake.

Warwick Vincent of Laval University, who studies Arctic conditions, traveled to the newly formed ice island and could not believe what he saw.

"This is a dramatic and disturbing event. It shows that we are loosing remarkable features of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of years. We are crossing climate thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change ahead," Vincent said Thursday.

I'm not poor (yet) (thank Goddess), but I've worked very hard and I'm two paychecks away from total disaster. I don't take out of town vacations, I don't own a car and, due to vision problems, I don't drive any more either. When I came down here I didn't have enough money and I didn't make enough money, and I'm still climbing may way out of the debt I piled up those early years.

Some people are incredibly lucky in life and believe that they earned their good fortune. I get discount vouchers for the movies. My concert tonight cost $20. I know a lot of people who have it much worse.

In my line of work, as soon as I leave a major metropolitan area, my income is reduced by 1/2 to 2/3. That's why I came here in the first place.

219. Very cool...been away for awhile...got in my truck expecting

reruns of the Ed Shultz show or similar and there was Malloy on Sirius Left....couple of years ago I bought A couple of Sirius systems because I wanted to hear Malloy...then AAR becomes exclusive of XM and I'm thinking of switching to XM...I hesitate...Malloy gets fired from AAR...I write a ton of letters to Sirius asking them to consider the great Malloy in their open time slot, nothing ever happens but acknowledgment of emails from Sirius...and tonight - Malloy (Nova M) was on Sirius... I don't how long he's been on Sirius to date, but..still very cool and a full circle for me and my liberal listening taste...Cheers to Mike and Nova M!!!
