And maybe Nikolai Ceaucescu in Romania...

4. I don't know the process to get a new forum/discussion group.
But vegetarianism, Sibel Edmonds, and football get their own groups here, I think we're pretty much getting to the point where such a forum would, ahem, have at least as much relevance...

Start research thread if it was sufficiently active, make research thread... they could feed traffic into each other.

24. Requesting formation of a Topic Forum or Discussion Group: MLK/Gandhi
Dear Skinner,

The purpose of such a group would be to discuss the methods of nonviolent protest as practiced by Dr. King and Gandhi, the underlying philosophy behind these methods, the results achieved, and the historical context and constraints in which their respective movements happened. How these same methods and philosophies were adopted and used by others, and with what result, and how they might be useful today is of course a central concern.

25. Sounds likw a winner.
I've just been perusing the web looking for scholastic materials on campaign strategies, etc.

My approach to things is sometimes too sarcastic and/or in your face -(I'm exceedingly demure here on DU)- but having recently been appointed to a city commission, I'm looking for some winning techniques in hopes of being more effective. Did I mention that my community is very conservative?

This forum sounds like it'd be a great learning and sharing project.

27. MLK and Gandhi weren't so much in the campaign mode, as offering
peaceful (and effective) resistance against oppression. I'm not exactly sure how their methods would be applicable to something like getting onto a city commission in a Republican town... not trying to needlessly discourage interest at the outset, as much can be learned from both men for any of us, I think.

Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 09:12 AM by Reader Rabbit
For the past two years, I've been doing a "satyagraha" unit with my eighth graders, so I've got a little background in the subject. Once I get to school today, I'll find the links to some websites I've got, plus videos, literature, etc.

This is an awesome idea!

ETA: Could we call it the "Satyagraha" forum?
