Can you believe how desensitized & barbaric the press has become?
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 09:43 AM by mtnsnake
On every major news channel, they're so excited how Saddam might be hanging from his neck in a matter of days, or perhaps if we're lucky...in hours...and we the viewers might get to see parts of it!! What they're really excited about is that they're going to record it and save parts of it for the archives, whatever that means. I'll bet half this country would line up to pay good money to see the whole thing live on pay per view TV with Bush and Cheney at the front of the line and that asshole Nascar driver, Kirk Shelmerdine, not too far behind them.

Hey, Saddam deserves to die for his barbaric crimes against humanity, but we don't need to be immersed in his hanging in such a barbaric way.

And Kirk, instead of making the news with your Bush/Cheney stickers painted on your car, how about making a REAL news story by signing up to go to Iraq, you sniveling little coward.

1. The press has become the ringmaster at a huge political circus
created by the machineries of both parties.

I tell you the people need to take ownership and shut down the circus.

I guess he didn't see the irony of his statement.

6. Though they are being goulish, what does anyone expect
when they have been spoonfed the violence and crassness that mark this adminstration. Everyday for 6 years they have seen the depravity that is the Jr. Adminsitration. Torture, war, death by drowing, hate, ect.
Nothing good has come from these slimebags.
So, yes, I do think the press is foolish but, I think they are also a bit jaded by the past 6 years.

The Society of the Spectacle
Chapter 1:
The Culmination of Separation
“But for the present age, which prefers the sign to the thing signified, the copy to the original, representation to reality, appearance to essence . . . truth is considered profane, and only illusion is sacred. Sacredness is in fact held to be enhanced in proportion as truth decreases and illusion increases, so that the highest degree of illusion comes to be the highest degree of sacredness.”
—Feuerbach, Preface to the second edition
of The Essence of Christianity
1
In societies dominated by modern conditions of production, life is presented as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has receded into a representation.
2
The images detached from every aspect of life merge into a common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered. Fragmented views of reality regroup themselves into a new unity as a separate pseudoworld that can only be looked at. The specialization of images of the world evolves into a world of autonomized images where even the deceivers are deceived. The spectacle is a concrete inversion of life, an autonomous movement of the nonliving.
3
The spectacle presents itself simultaneously as society itself, as a part of society, and as a means of unification. As a part of society, it is the focal point of all vision and all consciousness. But due to the very fact that this sector is separate, it is in reality the domain of delusion and false consciousness: the unification it achieves is nothing but an official language of universal separation.
4
The spectacle is not a collection of images; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images.
5
The spectacle cannot be understood as a mere visual deception produced by mass-media technologies. It is a worldview that has actually been materialized, a view of a world that has become objective.

12. saddam's hanging is a bushco dream come true...........
one of the biggest supporter's of executions puts another notch on his belt and most people's attention is redirected away from bushco's war which continues to fall into greater chaos.

13. And like everything else Bushco's done, it's a mistake.
Because Saddam will hang and NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

The insurgency will not wither. Bin Laden will not see the error of his ways. And there WILL be another major terror attack on us, sometime, somewhere.

And these morons will say "But we hanged Saddam! That was supposed to change everything!"

15. I wonder if Bill Kristol is getting a ticket? He can write about it and Glen Beck
can do color commentary. I am sure that the ghouls wish for a public burning vice a hanging. Why we could do it on the Mall! Or in London, perhaps at Wembley with giant screen TV!

Disgusting, but if anyone ever deserved to be hanged for his crimes, it is Saddam.

16. "Can you believe how desensitized & barbaric the press has become?"
Easily.

After watching CNN's coverage of the Challenger accident in '86, I'll put nothing past the ghouls.

...the way they zoomed in on the astronaut's families in the stands after they just saw their loved ones die.

Disgusting.

21. I remember that...it was indeed disgusting...
I remember coming home and not knowing what had happened. I turned on the TV and saw the space shuttle explode. I thought it was "live"--then I saw it over... and over...and over...again...and again...and again. It's like the network couldn't get enough of it.

But panning on the families as the tragedy took place was way beyond the pale.

17. It's hardly a new phenomenon. During the 20s and 30s it was a real
scoop to get execution pictures or gory death shots of some of the leading gangsters of the day.

22. Don't forget people bringing picnic baskets to battles or public hangings
I'm told that in Merrie Olde England, the inmates at Bedlam were a tourist attraction. Groups would tour Bedlam so they could get a look at the inmates and their antics.

18. "Saddam deserves to die for his barbaric crimes against humanity" . . .
maybe so, but who made the U.S judge, jury and executioner of the world? . . .

we had NO right -- ethical, moral or, most importantly, LEGAL -- to invade and occupy a sovereigh nation that had neither attacked nor threatened us . . . and we sure as hell have NO right -- ethical, moral, OR legal -- to execute its head of state (or facilitate said execution) . . . the invasion and occupation were crimes of the highest magnitude, and so is this . . .

that is probably what has me stumped the most is just how barbaric we have become as a people. my mouth hangs open with lack of understanding that people are not offended and outraged by this sort of coverage. that they actually participate in the anticipation of the death of any human being
