China, Iran, Saudi Arabia & America alone share the death penalty
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 10:37 AM by Philosoraptor
Of all the world's 'civilized' nations, only these four put people they deem criminals to death by hanging, beheading, electrocution, injection, gas, or firing squad.

Great company huh?

1. Iran & America tie for executing children.
Last year USA was #3 in the world for number of executions.

Yep, we're so "civilized" while they're so "barbaric".

2. My opinion of the DP has changed so much in the last few years--
I hadn't really though about it much before...but to give the State the power to kill makes no sense in a "free" society. Particuliarly when the State is run by HACKS.

5. death penalty
I think there are still some countries other than the ones you mentioned, that permit state-sponsored executions under exceptional circumstances. Most are communist or former communist countries. Which makes me wonder if the US is a rich man's "communist" state after all.

6. I believe your info is wrong
Those four countries do the vast majority of executions (94% in 2005), but for the sake of accuracy, I'll add this: "During 2005, at least 2,148 people were executed in 22 countries and at least 5.186 people were sentenced to death in 53 countries. These were only minimum figures; the true figures were certainly higher."

10. 69 countries have the death penalty and have executed people in the past 10 years
These are the countries, a number of which should be regarded as 'civilized' by any reasonable interpretation:

AFGHANISTAN, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA, BAHAMAS, BAHRAIN, BANGLADESH, BARBADOS, BELARUS, BELIZE, BOTSWANA, BURUNDI, CAMEROON, CHAD, CHINA, COMOROS, CONGO (Democratic Republic), CUBA, DOMINICA, EGYPT, EQUATORIAL GUINEA, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, GUATEMALA, GUINEA, GUYANA, INDIA, INDONESIA, IRAN, IRAQ, JAMAICA, JAPAN, JORDAN, KAZAKSTAN, KOREA (North), KOREA (South), KUWAIT, LAOS, LEBANON, LESOTHO, LIBYA, MALAYSIA, MONGOLIA, NIGERIA, OMAN, PAKISTAN, PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY, QATAR, RWANDA, SAINT CHRISTOPHER & NEVIS, SAINT LUCIA, SAINT VINCENT & GRENADINES, SAUDI ARABIA, SIERRA LEONE, SINGAPORE, SOMALIA, SUDAN, SYRIA, TAIWAN, TAJIKISTAN, TANZANIA, THAILAND, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, UGANDA, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, UZBEKISTAN, VIET NAM, YEMEN, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE

The execution methods you describe are in use in other countries besides the four you have mentioned.

Your claim is wildly inaccurate.

15. We are in the minority
From the aforementioned link, "More than half the countries in the world have now abolished the death penalty in law or practice."

Also from AI, Brazil abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes, but retains it "for exceptional crimes such as crimes under military law or crimes committed in exceptional circumstances."

The 94% figure is correct. "In 2005, 94 per cent of all known executions took place in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA."

BTW, why do executioners wear hooded masks when they murder other human beings?
