Are we DUers really out of touch with the rest of America?
Or are we just a microcosm of America? Are many other Americans as disgusted as some of us about the way this Saddam execution is being handled? Are they also wise to the illegality of the invasion? Is the rest of America also looking for the Democratic Party for some major change?

And if we do not get that "change", what happens then? Will we be alone in our online "revolution" or will other plain citizens pick up the cry? Where are we headed as a nation?

1. I'm disgusted that there is even going to be an execution
what a democracy we've created there - no appeals. Here we aren't even likely to try our war criminals in this administration.

2. Despite the recent election results, I'm still a little skeptical...
that americans will heed the call that folks like us are making to wake up and take back the country. Why? Complacency and gluttony, mostly.

3. Sometimes I wonder, but I think the rest will come around soon.
I've always felt 'outside' of the 'father knows best' world of so called reality, and I've always been a liberal, but there are millions of us, not just the few thousand here.

6. Americans are basically good people.
Are there butt heads out there? Yeah. There are now and there always will be. What I hang onto is the number of people who ARE offended by this all and the number of people who ARE either working to change stuff or at least aware of how bad it is. That number grows daily, I think.

Did you ever think that it would be mainstream media making comments about the asswipe in the WhiteHouse and how nuts he is? Did you ever expect that it would get to the point that the chimp would be the butt of negative comment after comment from even the conservative pundits? It has happened and continues to happen--and we discuss it on here every day in some way.

Americans as a whole can be self centered and suffer with tunnel vision--I don't think anyone can ever deny that. I also think that as a nation we have tremendous capacity for moral outrage--and we will act on that when it hits critical mass. I have not completely abandoned all hope yet.

No doubt, we are seeing a low point right now--but i think it is rather like a pendulum. It will start to swing back in the right direction, if it hasn't already.

Stay strong.

7. We were more "out of touch" when DU was launched.
We haven't changed, but the country has. That's progress. We just have to accept the fact that many people in the USA
would rather learn empirically than intellectually, even if it means a major disaster/pain is the consequence. There's little
solace in being able to say "I told you so" after every bush disaster.

9. Out Of Touch, No. Better Informed, Yes.
So, we are more likely to show our disgust over something bad happening then the general populace.

I think that if more people knew how contrived the Saddam trial was they would see the hanging as stupid, as well. But, most people still only know Saddam as the guy who invaded Kuwait and gassed the Kurds.

11. Agreed, but I would guess there are a lot with misgivings
for a different reason. While folks may not have paid attention, and thus have no opinion per the trial being fair or not (or might even suppose out of habit that "trials are fair"?) - I think that a whole lot of folks *are* paying attention to how STUPID bush's policies - esp per Iraq are (even if they didn't initially think they were stupid policies) - and probably many of those have the commonsense/gut reaction that a hanging solves nothing - but could spark/unleash even more violence. On that level, I would guess that we are not alone in great discomfort over this event. I wouldn't have said this a year ago - but I would bet that a lot of folks would now react the way we did were Bush to utter his "Bring em On!" challenge to the insurgents in these times. His machismo, seems to be almost (not quite but almost) universally viewed as shallow and foolhardy show.

12. Um, I think I just saw a poll that said 11% support escalating the war.
We are simply ahead of the curve. We set the trend and they catch up eventually.

13.  I don't even know if there is a way to tell .
I often wonder the very same thing . I wonder how many americans are really paying attention to anything other than what they see on the tv set .

This many times makes me wonder just how big of a group of people would actually hold the dems feet to the fire or if this would even relly do any good at all .

We could very well be a small group compared to the rest of america .

What is there to base this on other than the liberal talk show callers who you know have their eyes open or the number of bloggers who actually post their views ?

There are most likey many lurkers out there .

Another thing is yes we won the dems majority seats but what was the true reason behind this , as you all know there can be a thousand different reasons and ideas and hopes for just some dream of a small personal change such as the hope they will retain their job or many other small reasons that are not part of the big picture we may look at .

14. Were we out of touch for opposing the Iraq Invasion before it happened?
Or, were we just ahead of the curve?

Were we out of touch in calling Bush a liar in 2000, or were we again ahead of the curve?

Are we out of touch in being suspicious of electionic voting? For supporting universal health care? For bringing attention to the Downing Street Memo?

15. well
I'd say most Americans are out of touch and we're not. It seems like everyone loves to vote, consume, or involve themselves in things that are against their own well-being.
