You sit down in your favorite chair. You turn on Air America. |
|
You think you've made the right decision to enjoy yourself. Think again. Chances are you are black. Or female. You can't take care of yourself. Your kids will do drugs. You will drop out of school unless a white guy makes you go. Your little brother will be attacked in your nasty black neighborhood because your dad wasn't a dad and your big brother got arrested for a gun crime and your mom is too busy crying over your big brother--and anyway, she's a black woman so she can't do anything anyway. You are doomed unless you do as my condescending white female voice advises. So there. PTHHHTTTT!!
Anyone else hate these Ad Council PSAs? They are racist, sexist, infantile, and completely ridiculous fear-mongering.

That will make you a right proper COUNTRY American, and enable you to fulfill your purpose of making a lot of nice white babies.

4. I'm quite redneck already, thank you. |
|
My 82 mercedes diesel (when it runs) is country enough. I'm not ashamed of what I am, I am ashamed of how people who aren't like me are treated by my government.

2. Then on comes the sweet, sweet voice of Randi Rhodes. |
|
And all that tension just melts away, as the Queen of Hard Information rocks the house, and I learn things waaaayyyyyybefore anybody else does. Information is the Coin of the Realm. And I am therefore Rich.
Yeah, I know the PSA's are grotesque. But any advertiser that buys a spot gets in my head.
There is no other way. I shun commercial television and radio. I read books and watch films. The only advertising that gets anywhere NEAR MY PRECIOUS BRAIN is on AAR.
Oh, the pain. But -- The Gain.

3. My local station bumps Randi to a later time slot, and plays Ed Schultz. |
|
It's pretty much unlistenable to me these days. Ed isn't bad, but he's not as informed or as logical as I would like him to be. Randi is my favorite, but she's on when I'm not around a radio. The PSAs and the programming in Austin have just about killed my AAR listening lately.

5. Bummer. I had to stream for awhile, when our station in Sacto was shut down. |
|
It was worth it. But then they opened the other station, with a better signal. Now we have both stations, 1240 and 1320, both 24/7 excellence. Christine Craft is a local host, very, very cool, on after Randi, but on the other station.
The model is still amazingly new to me. I used to live in places where stations like this would have been burned down, and the hosts hauled off to Joe Arpaio's Pink Underwear and Green Baloney Desert Labor Camps.
Man, have things changed. And AAR is now purchased, by someone relatively cool, and eventually things should get better all around, if that doesn't sound too starry-eyed hopeful.
I think it's still regional problems, mostly. My AAR station has moved up a little -- local car dealers, tobacco stores, etc. And I definitely appreciate it.

6. I have to pay for XM to get Air America Radio |
|
You guys are lucky! Here in the FOURTH LARGEST CITY in the country--that's four million warm bodies in the metro area-- we can't get liberal radio, at last not AAR or Mike Malloy.
Only liberal radio we got is Pacifica, and it was bombed off the air TWICE in the space of just a couple of months, shortly after it opened in 1970.
I gotta pay for XM to hear any sanity other than Amy Goodman's voice on Democracy Now!
