George W. Bush made a very telling statement today when praising Gerald Ford. Gerald R. Ford -- the man who was never elected as president and had been appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew had to resign to face criminal charges in Maryland -- appointed George H. W. Bush to each high position he held in his climb to the top in American politics.

In praising Ford, Bush said, in part, “Gerald Ford came along when we needed him most.” How freighted those words are with meaning for the Bush family. With the resignation of Richard Nixon, one of Poppy Bush’s patrons was now in the wilderness. Bush himself was confronted with political oblivion since Nixon had been generous in advancing the career of a man who was the son of Prescott Bush, one of a handful of people who helped the young Nixon get started in Republican politics in the late forties and early fifties.

Through a tangled web of intriguing relationships, George H. W. Bush and Gerald R. Ford moved through post-Watergate America. Ford brought Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney into the center of power in his administration and you have to wonder how much of a hand Cheney and Rumsfeld had in the events in East Timor in 1975 when tens of thousands of people were killed in that country by a regime which had the backing of the US government.

Gerald Ford sure did come along when the Bush family needed him the most -- and this country has been paying the price ever since.
