News agencies report that U.S. officials have informed Saddam Hussein's lawyers that they have handed Hussein to Iraqi authorities, according to one of the lawyers.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Saddam Hussein could be hanged as early as Saturday, one of the former Iraqi dictator's lawyers told CNN on Friday, but a subsequent statement by the team raises some confusion.

"Different sources" said the death sentence would be carried out Saturday morning, defense attorney Najib al-Nuaimi said from Doha, Qatar.

"I think the Americans will accompany him onto the execution stage and I think they will have a pre-recorded film that will be released evening if they carry out the sentence in the day," he said.

In addition, Hussein's chief lawyer Khalil al-Dulaimi said U.S. officials asked him on Friday to collect Hussein's belongings. (Watch what signs point to an imminent execution )

don't misunderstand me, i'm opposed to the death penalty for Saddam Hussein or anyone else, but is anyone really surprised that they're going to hang him? didn't we see this as the inevitable result when they dug him out of that hole in the ground?
