Do Bush/Cheney ever consider that at some future date they could be tried for war crimes? |
|
They're getting ready to hang Saddam Hussein. I don't believe in capital punishment and I think that Hussein, and those of his ilk, should spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Nonetheless, I, for one, can't distinguish between Hussein's crimes and those of Bush/Cheney and company. I have no doubt that it never crossed their minds that they could be held accountable for what they've done in and to Iraq.
I'd be willing to argue that, outside of some portion of the American population, most of the people in the world consider them to be war criminals.
As unlikely as it is that we'll ever see justice in the case of Bush/Cheney, a close look at Hussein vs Bush/Cheney, seems to indicate that there is little or no difference between them.
If you disagree, give me your best shot as to why you feel that way.

2. I don't think they were expecting what happened in November |
|
They thought they would be in power much longer, and therefore safe.

4. " I have no doubt that it never crossed their minds that they could be held accountable..." |
|
Oh, I think it's crossed their minds. Witness the fact they've hired a bunch of lawyers for when the investigations begin next year/in a few days (!). If they're so guilt-free, why might they think lawyers will come in handy? Whether any doubt disturbs their sleep is debatable, but an occasional cold sweat wouldn't surprise me.

bush and cheney are humble, hard working christian men. They are leaders of the party of responsibility and integrity. It pains them every day that so much pain and suffering is going on in Iraq as they get down on their knees and beg for and get forgiveness from god and james dobson. They really wish all the bloodshed would end so we could all get along. I hope this clears things up for you. Ask any "christian" in America who gets his news from limbaugh and they'll tell you the same thing.

6. I doubt if they've given it a moment's thought. |
|
They've never been accountable for anything they've ever done in their entire lives. At this point my bet is they think they're invincible, and why not?

Not because of their acts, but because all the other acts perpetrated by all the other manifestations of American government in places like Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
Try one, and it opens the door to try them all...and there are a lot of people who have no interest in seeing that precedent set.

14. Unfortunately, I must agree with you. Sigh. Will we ever see a world |
|
in which the term "civilized" isn't a cynical joke?"
Yet, every "would-be conquerer" has ended up in the dustbin of history. So let it be with Bush/Cheney -- and maybe even the U.S. We now hold a nuclear threat over the entire planet. And someday, there might be a president as blind, pugnacious and ignorant as Bush who will actually "push that button."
I'd be content to be a citizen of a country that desires nothing more than a decent degree of health, peace and prosperity for its citizens. It may never happen. But, as John Lennon said, "Imagine."

11. They'll never put be on trial |
|
The main reason is that it isn't just the American government whose hands are dirty, but even within the US they'll always get away with it. That's what has always happened and always will. There is no justice and there is most definitely no international justice. That's a fairytale. History is written by the winners and George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are by default winners. Just like Henry Kissinger got away with all the depravity which he has done and continued to do until he was in his 80s already.

12. Yep. They thought about it. Then, like the rest of the Nazis... |
|
...they bought 'em some land in dictator-friendly, extradition-free Paraguay. That is the compound the Imperial family will run to if their crimes are revealed and the people want to put them in jail.
But beware impeachment. The Busheviks will leave truckloads of corpses before they would be tried or convicted.

17. Yes, but in Paraguay, they won't have all the protection they |
|
have here, no matter how cozy they are with the present government. If some special ops from some country who has a grudge against them wants to extricate them, it will be a lot easier in Paraquay. This is why the Israelis were able to kidnap runaway Nazis so easily.

18. I have to agree with you, Cleita. And even though I might not be in |
|
agreement with any country that has the capability of "extracting" and holding them responsible for their war crimes, at least it would produce some semblance of justice.
My real wish is that we ourselves -- the American people -- would recognize their crime spree -- foreign and domestic -- and would bring them to trial here.
And hopefully, they would be found guilty of the vast number of crimes against our constitution, and against humanity, that they have committed. That statement would exclude me from the jury. But I fully believe that any twelve fair-minded people would put these despicable criminals away for life.

19. That would be my first choice too. But if they do get away, I |
|
think they might find some surprises in store for them. This is another one of their plans that they didn't think through and research very well.

13. I'm sure they think of it, especially since we are still talking about |
|
them. Their best efforts to shut up the voice of the left by taking over our press and churches didn't completely silence us as planned. The fact that there is still a DU and a more or less free internet and that some left wing voices are still heard on the radio led to the victory in November. No wonder * looks like an unmade bed these days.
He made the remark once that he was a high risk target. So he knows he could be assassinated in any moment. He knows also that many of us want to take the legal route of impeachment. He saw what Ken Starr did to Bill Clinton over a blue dress. Imagine what will be done to him about WMD lies and his many other treasonous acts.
Those who told him everyone would be in lockstep with him once they took away all our liberties and propagandized us to death were wrong. They didn't quite get the job done.
He knows.

15. Will any thing be done too or about the BFEE and associates? |
|
Not a snowballs chance in hell. Too many would go down on both sides of the isle. Our political system would see the extinction of all life on this planet before they would allow an American evil tyrant see justice. Face it people, aside from a slap on the wrist, they are above the laws of common men, they have an agenda, and until we the people wise up and unite, the elite will not suffer the justice of any lesser class or looser dictator…

They have the weight and power of the USA behind them. They could rape babies on MTV and all that would happen to them is that they would be forced to resign (a la Nixon) from their jobs.

20. Nixon's crimes were really much, much worse. |
|
Yes, I loathe the Bush administration and virtually everything it's done, but when it comes to sheer, cold blooded mass murder, Nixon put Bush to shame.
And what was DC pundit class patting itself on the back about just this week? Why, that marvelously civilized, courageous Gerald Ford who oh-so-selflessly "healed" this nation by granting a murderous thug a blanket pardon.
So to answer your question, the answer is no, because they know that there's no way in hell that their Iraq clusterfuck will merit anything more onerous than some unflattering pages in history textbooks.
