DU Folding@Home Thread #7 - Team DU in the Top 1000 Now!
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 07:43 PM by mcscajun
Team DU, You DID It! A great big round of :applause: for everyone!

The DU Folding@Home Team continues its outstanding growth; yesterday we broke the 1000 barrier, and we're rapidly heading for the top 800, when more stats will be available to team members at http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=48157.

We're doing more and more important medical research every week! Imagine catching and passing the freepers, doing medical research and letting your computer do it all for you? How's that for an offer you can't refuse? How? All you need to do is join Team # 48157, Democratic Underground's own Folding@Home Team!

Join the Team here: http://folding.stanford.edu

Since ny_liberal sounded the first call on December 22, 2005, 154 DUers have donated the spare computing cycles of 228 CPUs to the cause. We started out small; our ranking was around the 17,000 mark out of over 40,000 teams.

Today, we're firmly entrenched in the Top 1000 Teams and going for the top 500!

Date of last work unit:      2006-02-01 16:23:29
Active CPUs within 50 days:      228
Team ID:      48157
Grand Score:      256057
Work Unit Count:      2024
Team Ranking (incl. aggregate):      953 of 42512

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48157

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Our DU CPUs are busily simulating the folding of proteins to support medical research into diseases and disorders that kill, cripple, and impair human life. Help the work...help find cures!

Every PC has spare computing cycles to contribute to the effort. The program is small and runs in background, can be paused at any time, or closed entirely if your workload or hobbies require more CPU resources. There's even an interesting graphic to let you watch the simulation in progress. Old PCs, Slow PCs, Spare PCs lying around that can be attached to your home network all help the cause. The race may go to the swift, but slow and steady racks up points, too!

Mac and Linux clients are available, also.

You can have fun catching freepers along the way. It's a great fringe benefit to joining Team DU. :)

The freeper team is about to move into the top 300 -- We need to double or even triple our membership to knock 'em off that pedestal they're sneering down on us from; what do you say, DU?

Join the Team here: http://folding.stanford.edu

If you've already joined the team, there's still more you can do. Send out the call to your progressive friends and family; get them to join our team!

C'mon, DUers! More CPUs!!!

1. Awesome! 228 CPUs active but we need MORE!!!
And I haven't forgotten about putting together a FAQ for people wanting to know what F@H is and how to download and install it.

This week just turned hectic on me (at work and at home) and I haven't had time to get to it.

It's coming....I promise! :)

We can put it in the OP for a numbered thread for sure, but it will certainly deserve it's OWN Thread. :)

* I know it ain't easy putting all this technobabble into real plain English. Kudos to you for attempting it. :applause:

How soon that happens depends on the WU you've gotten. Mine have taken as little as two days and as long as a week to complete. But hang in there you will start showing up soon enough.

Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 12:24 AM by Wrinkle_In_Time
1) Anyone is helping the cause -- regardless of political orientation -- is wonderful.
2) Freepers dedicate their effort to Reagan irritates me personally (I never liked him... "great communicator" my ass).
3) Freepers are engaged in science makes me want to report them to the Witch-Smeller-Persuivant, or Heretic-General, or Cardinal-Fang, or just vomit.
4) Maybe, just maybe, DU can outpace them, even though they do have a lead on us.
5) It doesn't really matter who is ahead of who, since science will help us all regardless of political orientation or religious belief. That's the nice thing about science, it still works even if you don't believe in it.

/Yeah, it's a conflicted set of statements.
//I love science, me.

Edit: Apparently "Signature lines are currently turned off due to high traffic". Not that I had a signature line of particular note, but this does inspire me to promote the James Randi Educational Foundation (www.jref.org). Not only do they promote thinking, skepticism and naturalism (as opposed to supernaturalism), but they are nice people who also have a team of Folders in the 900's. I applaud their work.

He must work in an IT department of a University. If he's running something on a logon script it would be very easy to add that many CPUs in a day. It'd be a shame if he got fired for doing this.

I wish all schools, colleges, computer labs, internet cafes, libraries, etc. would take part in this tremendeous project. We would find a cure to cancer much sooner.

But we need more CPUs! The freepers are actually adding more CPUS faster than we are.

On Jan 17th when i started keeping stats they DU had 35.5% as many cpu's active as the Freepers. Now we only have 35.2%.....we have to get to 100% (CPU Parity) before we'll even hope to catch up to them.

45. You must be looking at the F@H stats page
Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 07:01 PM by Caoimhe
here http://fahstats.com/index.php?col=1&search=democratic%20underground

which seems a bit different than site http://fahstats.com/index.php?col=1&search=democratic%20underground
I guess they update the different pages at different times
then there's the extremeoverclockers one here: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=48157

We are doing very well, but we NEED MORE CPUs!!! Tell your friends, your family, your neighbors sister in laws grandmother! Whoever you know that wants to help out science and is of a liberal mindset, get them on this team! DU TEAM# 48157 Tell them to go here http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html to download it, follow the instructions and let it run! It won't hurt a thing.

PS the freeptards are talking about our folding team: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/user-posts?id=55596 when I googled extremeoverclockers to find that link, I got a link to a freeper post.

heheh!

BTW Glad you are so obsessed with us, freeper re:puke:s! Kiss my Democratic ASS! :dem:

53. I'm loving this. We're at 240 CPU's. I'm hoping we can get
300 and more soon. It will take time, but we can do it. Placing high in the stats is good for DU too, it gives us some notice with some that may no know we exist. Folding is good for DU on so many levels. We are doing something good for a fellow man, we are building community spirit, we are gaining good exposure for this site, and we are making the freepers look over their shoulders.

The Reagan fellating asswipes over at Free Republic have team members with access to computer labs.

One person said he brought 90 CPUS online at 80% utilization which explains their stellar CPU growth lately.

It'd be funny to look into it a little bit and get the jerk fired for violating IT regulations.

83. Actually they don't... This type of software is a security risk
in an enterprise environment. Most Enterprise IT groups would find this behavior unacceptable. More and more shops are moving toward a managed desktop solution (locking down what apps can/can not run on them). I work in the enterprise desktop management industry. The people having 100+ CPUs at their disposal are probably doing so either because
- they manage those desktops,
- they are doing so without the approval on the owners,
- they have gotten everyone they know to run the client with their account information, OR
- they reverse-engineered the network traffic and are sending false results back.

104. Dunno, can't speak for those companies, just what I know
about our customers... I can't see them allowing this type of app to run. Think about the power usage alone to run the computers overnight (many big enterprises will hibernate idle systems).

I could see where some companies like Apple and IBM would want to show off their computing might... and they'd have the resources to secure these computers.

I got this from a discussion over in the Lounge.

Post #75. Installation tutorial for Window's users

These instructions pertain to using the graphical client for Windows.

1) Download the client software. Here's a link to the download site:

http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

- on the download page under the section "Please download one of the clients listed below", find the proper link (either the WinXP/2000 or Win98/ME downloads)
- click the download button and save the file to the local computer (so that it can reinstalled if needed)

2) Browse to the file that was just downloaded, and open it up to start the installation process.

3) On the 'User Information' step of the install process, enter the username which will identify you on the F@H list. The username can be pretty much anything, and can even be your DU name. On the download page (link above) there is a username check utility that allows you to check to see if a username is available.

4) Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

5) At the end of the installation process, make sure that the 'Run the Installed Application' box is checked.

6) The Folding@Home Control Panel is the first Window to pop up after installation (unless the View Readme box was also checked). On the Control Panel:

- make sure that your username is correct
- enter in 48157 for the team number
- on the Advanced tab, there are several options that a user might want to check:
a) Check the Pause work... box when installed on a laptop so that it stops processing when the laptop is on battery power.
b) Set the CPU usage Percent value to a lower value so that less strain is put on the CPU. (I leave it at 100%)

7) The F@H client should be set automatically to run at startup. To check if it is, click Start->Programs->Startup and look for the Folding@Home entry.

8) Some considerations:

- F@H uses OpenGL, which only allows one application to use it at any given time. That means that any games or applications that also use OpenGL will not work when F@H is running. To stop the F@H process, find the F@H icon in the system tray (next to the clock on the taskbar). The icon looks like a red cogwheel (I guess). Right click the icon to open the context menu. The context menu will allow you to open the Control Panel, pause F@H processing, or close the F@H process completely. To run another application that uses OpenGL, you have to select Quit. (Note: pausing F@H does NOT allow you to run another OpenGL app). If you quit F@H, make sure that you start the process back up when you're done with your gaming. To do so, click Start->Programs->Folding@Home->Folding@Home 5.xx.

- Because the F@H client is CPU intensive, make sure that your computer is clean and well ventilated. All intake holes should be clear of dust, and open to the air (not pressed up against a wall or desk). Give your CPU a rest at least once a day by pausing the F@H client for about 15 minutes. This allows any excess heat to be dispersed.

- After installation, the F@H client is pretty much independent. It will download and work on Work Units (WUs) by itself. You can check the progress (and see a pretty image) by double clicking on the F@H icon in the system tray. To view your overall progress, the DU team list is here:

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48157

- I've noticed that sometimes the F@H icon doesn't appear in the system tray. This only has happened to me on a Windows XP Professional machine after it restarts. To get the F@H icon back, you have to stop the processes manually. To do this:
a) Right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
b) On the Task Manager screen, select the Processes tab.
c) There are two processes that need to end. One is the FahCore_78.exe process, the other is the winFAH.exe process. I believe that you have to stop the winFAH process first.
d) WARNING: stopping other processes can adversely affect your machine, and might require you to restart your computer. Only end the F@H processes. If you do end other processes, and your computer starts acting funny, don't say you weren't warned!

I've been kid watching today. We picked up my friend's kid this morning to come over and watch the Kansas-Oklahoma basketball game with us. His dad doesn't have a television so we've been picking him up so he can watch the games this season. I just got back from dropping him at practice and I found out several of my brothers are coming by in a few minutes. I'm trying to figure out how to feed everybody and pick the kid up from basketball practice so we can finish his homework. I'm a little overwhelmed today.

98. I'm not
Believe me I am not playing enough! :banghead:: I've been really busy these past few months and haven't had as much time as I would like. For some odd reason my husband thinks, since we are self-employed, that some of my time is better spent doing billable work. I have no idea what's up with that! I guess he likes doing things like eating and keeping the heat on.

Actually we've have been busy with work these past few months. We had a bit of a dry spell last summer so I haven't minded this recent spate of work. It was starting to look a little bleak but lately we actually started to save a little. I'm also aware that if this workload continues I will be able to upgrade my computer to a faster one by the end of the summer. :eyes: My gaming experience will be greatly enhanced sooner than I had expected, so it all works out in the end.

And you're right, I need to have the full power of my current CPU available especially when I'm in the final show down with Baal.

iconoclastNYC has posted a thread at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x337518 concerning suggestions for the DU f@h team's future. A lot of thought was put into that post and I think it deserves a read by everyone involved with folding. 114. That's a great post... we also need a TWEAKING Thread
I've found a way to improve the performance of the app on my machines that not everyone may know. I'll start a thread on that in general later this evening once I've compiled all the data.

here's the latest update on Free Republic:

OK, new thread for the next week, now that Pittsburgh has another Super Bowl ring.

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 714 processors and 271 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with over a 50 computers now from GetLoaded.com, a trucking support website, all contributing while their owners ply our freeways keeping the nation moving.

We now have 22 members who have contributed at least 10,000 points each. Greenbo, stylin19a, and smith288 are the latest to reach this milestone. Chesterbelloc and mediamole will join them this next week. Great job! Even dfwddr will make this mark one day ;`)

Even more impressive, our team now boasts 180 members who have folded at least 1,000 points. That is more than the entire number of folders for our erstwhile left-wing environazi competitors!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 268. We will be in the Top 250 on Wednesday!

As we continue to grow there are a number of milestones coming around the bend:

Top 250 by February 10
Top 200 by the end of the February

We have 1,350,000 points so far and have folded over 10,000 WU. We will soon reach an exalted mark of folding a million points per month, each and every month! Fantastic!

Thanks again to all that are helping us advance science and promote the peaceful use of computers.

130. Good News/Bad News
The Bad News is, they are producing twice as fast as us.

The Good New is, our team is growing 4 times faster than theirs.

If our growth continues at the same pace, we will be able to match their production in about 5 weeks (mid-March).

132. Catching them will take a bit longer... they have a head start
of about 1 million points. If we simply matched their production in 5 weeks, we'd still need to grow in order to overtake them, and that would depend on how much more we continued to grow vs. their growth. If we match their production and stop growing, we won't overtake them w.r.t. points. If we continue to grow twice as fast, we could probably overtake them in about 2-3 more months (by June perhaps)...

155. Movin' On Up...

Of all of the 740 teams ahead of us in the standings, there are only about 80 other teams that are folding faster than we are with our current number of CPUs. If we can continue to attract more participants to our DU team we will soon become more productive than many of these 80 teams. We will be in the top 100 teams in less than a year. If we can attract more folks to our team it could happen even sooner...
