4. I'm not sure about no mail delivery |
|
If memory serves me, mail service can not be terminated more then two days. Monday is a holiday so it won't be delivered Sunday and Monday. The first of the month(year) bills will just have to wait.

9. Most financial markets will be closed |
|
Last I heard (I work for a brokerage firm), the stock markets will be closed but the bond markets will be open. I believe banks will also be open.

12. Yes, but that would be the case anyway |
|
Today is the last day of the year the markets will be open. They close today at 3:30 pm Eastern time (that is about 15 minutes from now.) Tomorrow and the day after are Saturday and Sunday, when the markets are always closed. They are also December 30 and 31. Even if the stock markets were open on Monday, all transactions would be taking place on January 1, 2007.
As a bit of trivia, that is why there is no market holiday for New Years when January 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, to squeeze in that last business day. No such luck when it falls on a Friday or Monday.

I'm always in a dither come the first of the year with tax info gathering. I keep track of every penny we have invested anywhere. JANUS has been very good to us for years.

14. You might want to know, then... |
|
You can contribute to an IRA, 401(k) or similar account through the last business day on or before April 15 and have it credited as a contribution for the previous year. The deadline is not Tax Day; if April 15 is a Sunday, you must make your contribution on or before Friday, April 13. Also, the account must exist in the the calendar year being credited; you can not set up an IRA on January 10, 2007 and make a contribution for 2006. But mind you, I am not a licensed broker (obligatory disclaimer) so check with your financial advisor before taking any actions.
